A Pleasant Surprise

BrianK, B&H Photo
31 March 2015
  • Excerpt: This lens has surprised me. A prior reviewer said it exceeded expectations. The same has been true for me on a Sony a77MII. I am getting nice, bright, sharp actions shots (sports primarily) even at full telephoto.
  • Pros: Consistent Output, Fast / accurate auto-focus
  • Cons: Heavy

Exceeded my expectations

  • Excerpt: Used correctly, thi lens in nothing short of outstanding. I had the previous version and when using it with my A99, I was not impressed. The G2 is really different. The AF is much faster and more accurate. The CA is well controlled, and contrast/sharpness is more than i hoped for.
  • Pros: Consistent Output, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Lightweight, Strong Construction

Tracks much better as well

  • Summary: Much faster and more accurate autofocus than the previous 70-400. Tracks much better as well. Better in low light. Can't wait to pair it with the new Sony A99ii when it comes out.

Love It

  • Excerpt: I bought this lens as an upgrade to my sal70300g lens to give me a little more length for wildlife photography. I am very pleased with this lens. It is sharper at 400mm than the 70300g is at 300mm and less and I think the 70300g is an excellent lens. The color and contrast is great.

Exceeds Expectations

DrBill14, Adorama
7 December 2014
  • Excerpt: Bought this lens to replace an 80-200 f2.8 and 300mm f2.8 from my film days and to complement my Sony SAL 16-50 so that with these two lenses I can travel much lighter than previously. I wanted the extra reach of the 400mm end and the tripod collar so did not opt for the lighter 70-300.
  • Pros: Consistent Output, Easily Interchangeable, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Nice Bokeh, Strong Construction
  • Cons: Heavy, No Zoom Lock

  • Excerpt: This is the first long lens I've owned and I have not had it out much. I have enjoyed it in action images of my grandkids and at the ranch shooting wildlife it focused so well I had deer within twenty feet from where I sat and they didn't locate me as the auto focus worked when the shutter fired it...
  • Pros: Consistent Output, Easily Interchangeable, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Nice Bokeh, Strong Construction
  • Cons: Hard To Find A Wrap, Heavy

  • Excerpt: My first piece of high end glass and I can't be more happy with it. Super fast auto-focus, and very quiet. It's built tough and so far has stood up well to my needs. I do a lot of hiking and outdoor exploring and have no had any issues.
  • Pros: Consistent Output, Durable, Easily Interchangeable, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Nice Bokeh, Rugged, Strong Construction
  • Cons: Heavy
