Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro Lens

PhotoReview
1 August 2010
  • Summary: An affordably-priced true macro lens with an ideal focal length for portraiture. The 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro sits in the middle of Sigma's range of 1:1 true macro lenses. Keenly priced, it is designed for use with full frame digital SLR cameras, but can also be fitted to DSLRs with smaller APS-C size sensors. It covers a similar field of view to a 158mm lens in 35mm format when fitted to Nikon, Pentax and Sony cameras with 1.5x crop factors or 168mm with Canon DSLRs. . .
  • Pros: You want an affordable macro lens that can also be used for portraiture., You'd like to photograph live insects and other small, not-very-mobile animals., You require edge-to-edge sharpness for copying., You want a lens that requires no readjustment when you fit filters. Don't buy this lens if :, You want fast and quiet autofocusing., You require built-in image stabilisation., You're not prepared to use a tripod for critical macro work.

Sigma AF 105mm f/2.8 EX DG macro - Review / Lab Test Report

photozone.de
26 February 2008
  • Conclusion: The Sigma AF 105mm f/2.8 EX DG macro is an excellent lens without any significant flaw. It's optically as good as the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM macro. The lens has a very good build quality though not quite as nice as the Canon due to its focus extension system and the conventional AF drive. However, the price tag is also lower so if you're on a budget the lens is certainly worth a deep thought (as is the Tamron AF 90mm f/2.8 SP).

  • Conclusion: Regarding all the excellent lens alternatives in this segment it is quite difficult to select a favorite ... but the good news is that there isn't really a wrong choice.
