Sigma APO Macro 180mm F3.5 EX DG IF HSM Lens Review

SLR Lens and Camera Reviews
6 June 2009
  • Summary: Sigma APO Macro 180mm f/3.5 EX DG HSM is a very strong contender among telephoto macro lenses. The lens combines very strong image performance on both full frame and APS-C cameras, excellent build quality, low level of distortion and good color handling, all that at very aggressive price. There does not seem to be any glaring weaknesses with the lens and that by itself is a major achievement.

REVIEW: Sigma 180mm f/3.5 EX DG Macro

  • Conclusion: With the price of this lens being half that of the Marque competition and the performance being better in some areas and almost as good in others, we can do little else but to recommend this optic as an excellent buy. If you are in the market for a long Macro lens, you would do well to give this one some serious consideration.
  • Pros: Good build and finish with excellent tripod bush, Three year Manufacturers warranty (UK only), Silent AF that is quick for a Macro, Excellent value for money
  • Cons: A little soft wide open.

Sigma 180mm f/3.5 APO EX DG HSM Macro Lens

PhotoReview
1 August 2010
  • Summary: A capable and value-priced macro lens with a good working distance for close-ups of invertebrates and other small subjects.Sigma's 180mm f/3.5 APO EX DG HSM Macro is the only lens in its macro range with an HSM autofocusing motor - but only on the Sigma, Nikon-D and Canon mounts. Designed for use on full frame digital SLR cameras, but can also be fitted to DSLRs with smaller APS-C size sensors, where it covers a similar field of view to a 270mm lens when fitted to Nikon,...
  • Pros: You want an affordable macro lens with a good working distance for photographing active insects and other small animals., You want fast and quiet autofocusing., You want a lens that remains the same length throughout its focusing range., You want a lens that requires no readjustment when you fit filters. Don't buy this lens if :, You require built-in image stabilisation., You're not prepared to use a tripod for critical macro work.

  • Conclusion: From an expensive prime lens of high quality we expect mainly and above all very high image quality. It is one of main reasons plenty of amateur photographers give up much more universal zoom lenses. Unfortunately in this category the tested Sigma 180 mm f/3.5 Macro didn’t fare well.
  • Cons: image resolution should have been better for this price/quality segment,, slow and not very accurate autofocus.

Sigma AF 180mm f/3.5 EX HSM APO macro - Review / Test Report

  • Conclusion: The Sigma AF 180mm f/3.5 EX HSM APO macro is a very capable macro lens with very high resolution figures, marginal vignetting and non-existing distortions. Unfortunately CAs are a on the high side which is unusual for a tele fix-focal lens - this is a correctable issue though (via PS ACR, RawShooter, etc.). The build quality is very high and thanks to HSM the AF operates pretty fast and virtually silent.

  • Summary: Od drogiego obiektywu stałoogniskowego wysokiej klasy oczekuje się przede wszystkim bardzo wysokiej jakości obrazu.
