Excellent Lens For the Money!
16 March 2011
Summary: I was VERY skeptical at best about buying a Sigma Lens. I have read so many reviews that were rated under a 3 etc. After agonizing for a month over spending more than a house payment on a Canon, I decided to try the Sigma. I have to say, I was not dissapointed at all for the moeny I spent. I have no regrets whatsoever. Since Canon does not make a standard EF lens for this size, it's not fair to judge Sigma.
Summary: i love the weight and pro feel of this lens , it is an EX so it must be that kind of quality. its not exactly the sharpest lens, if i could go back i would get the tamron 70-200 2.8 because i hear it has excellent optics where it beats the sigmas, although the HSM on the sigma is fast and quiet, i would take good sharp crisp pictures any day.
Summary: Sigma has been under-rated for years but the fact is that Sigma puts out great camera equipment. All of my lenses are made by Sigma and I've shot photos next to photographers who were factory equipt and no one could tell the difference. I used this Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG APO Macro HSM II to shoot a jazz concert indoors under low lighting conditions. The business that hired me to photograph the concert were blown away by the photos.
Summary: Fantastic lens for the price conscious buyer. Does not work with the Canon extenders but does work well with the Kenko 2x. Great for those indoor sporting events/weddings or general purpose. Some vignetting on the full frame sensor bodies. Noticeable softness as well on the edges. Both of these traits are much more noticeable on the full frame bodies and if you have a cropped sensor (20d-50d or Rebel) You will probably never even see these issues!
Summary: Fast 2.8 and constant throughout the range. No image stabilization although I know this will come with a heavy price. I need this lens to take photos of my son's graduation this June. I'm currently using an 18-270mm f/3.5 Tamron lens but it still lack the punch that I'm looking for because of the limited f-stop. I guess this one will do the job.
