REVIEW: Sigma 50mm f/2.8 DG Macro EX

photodo

  • Conclusion: There really isnt a lot wrong with this lens as it is well built and optically performs to a very high standard. It maintains Sigmas deserved reputation for producing high quality Macro lenses admirably. My only complaint would be with the extending front element along with the short distance required for 1:1 photography but if that is a problem for you, then go for the just as good 105mm version.
  • Pros: Excellent optical quality in all areas, Good build quality and finish, Reasonable price, Metal hood gives choice of filter size
  • Cons: Extending front element., Slow autofocus, No soft case as with other EX lenses

  • Excerpt: Sigma's 50mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro lens offers a basic introduction to macro photography, with none of the bells and whistles such as silent focusing or image stabilisation, at a budget price point of around £255. It offers life size magnification at its closest focus and being a full frame lens it is compatible with both full frame and crop sensor DSLRS.

Sigma 50mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro Lens

PhotoReview
1 August 2010
  • Summary: An affordable, high-performing macro lens that is also ideal for copying.Sigma's 50mm f/2.8 EX DG has the shortest focal length and lowest price of the four macro lenses in the company's current line-up. Designed for use with full frame digital SLR cameras, it can also be fitted to DSLRs with smaller APS-C size sensors, where it covers a similar field of view to a 75mm lens in 35mm format with Nikon, Pentax and Sony cameras or 80mm with Canon cameras. . .
  • Pros: You're comfortable with short working distances., You want an affordable macro lens that delivers sharp images at mid-range aperture settings., You require edge-to-edge sharpness for copying., You want competent auto and manual focusing., You want a lens that requires no readjustment when you fit filters., You'd like a lens that delivers attractive bokeh. Don't buy this lens if :, You want to photograph live insects and other small, mobile animals (the working distanc...

Sigma AF 50mm f/2.8 EX DG macro - Review / Test Report

photozone.de
1 September 2008
  • Conclusion: The Sigma AF 50mm f/2.8 EX DG macro is an excellent lens without any significant optical flaws. Compared to the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM macro it shows less vignetting at wide-open aperture - other than that both lenses perform quite similar. Mechanically the Canon has an edge though thanks to a fast USM AF drive combined with a true IF design (constant length). However, the Sigma is earns some points due to its lower price tag and a more future-proof full-frame design.

Sigma AF 50mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro test side

objektivguide.com
25 May 2011
