REVIEW: Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM

  • Excerpt: Gary Wolstenholme takes a look at Sigma's flagship standard zoom lens for full-frame cameras. Sigma's 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM sports a fast maximum aperture of f/2.8 throughout the zoom range and silent HSM focusing. Being an EX lens it sits at the top of their professional zoom range and costs around £600.
  • Pros: Excellent optical performance stopped down to f/4 and below, Good build quality, Fast autofocus
  • Cons: Resolution at maximum aperture at focal lengths beyond 35mm, Barrel Distortion at 24mm

Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM Lens

The Digital Picture

  • Excerpt: All of the high-volume lens makers (including Canon, Nikon, Sony, Tamron and Sigma) make one, and a big population of photographers has or wants one. I am of course referring to the ultra-useful 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. The 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM is Sigma's latest version of this lens and this one comes in a mount for all of the just-mentioned cameras (except Tamron as they do not currently make cameras).

Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM review

  • Summary: Summing this lens up in a paragraph or two is actually quite difficult, as it's almost like I've tested two completely different lenses at once. The first one being an f/2.8 zoom lens, which should be great for low light photography, but unfortunately falls slightly below par in terms of performance, especially at focal lengths beyond 35mm. Here the resolution at maximum aperture just isn't what you'd expect for a flagship lens from any lens manufacturer.
  • Pros: Excellent optical performance stopped down to f/4 and below, Good build quality, Fast autofocus
  • Cons: Resolution at maximum aperture at focal lengths beyond 35mm, Barrel Distortion at 24mm

Sigma AF 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM - Full Format Review / Test Report

photozone.de
14 September 2009
  • Conclusion: Based on its sheer specs the Sigma 24-70/2.8 EX DG HSM is a very attractive lens. It promises professional grade results at a more attractive price point. It terms of mechanical build quality it is certainly up there with the best in its class with the exception of weather sealing maybe. The AF speed it a tad slower compared to Canon's USM but it's still comfortably fast. However, the key aspect is, of course, the optical performance.

Sigma AF 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM (FX) - Review / Test Report

photozone.de
1 September 2009
  • Conclusion: On paper, the Sigma 24-70/2.8 EX DG HSM is a very attractive lens. With its excellent build quality it feels like a pro tool and its huge diameter and front lens gives reason to hope for superior optical performance. Unfortunately, this is only true regarding sharpness in the image center stopped down.

24-70 mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM

LensTip.com
3 June 2009
  • Conclusion: Sigma is known for launching lenses with good quality/price ratios. In most cases they are only slightly worse than the brand-name competitors (if at all) but they are significantly cheaper. The new Sigma 24-70 mm f/2.8 fits this strategy requirements very well. It is two times cheaper than the similar Canon, Nikon or Sony/Zeiss lenses but it is their equal (even more than equal in the case of the Canon) when it comes to optical properties.
  • Cons: too low picture quality in the full frame corner near the maximum relative aperture,, visible distortion at wide apertures, especially on the full frame,, significant vignetting toward the focal length ends,, quite visible coma in the full frame corners for the range of 24-45 mm.
