What a let down!

InspireHarmony, Amazon
29 September 2012
  • Summary: after reading all the reviews, I decided to pull the trigger and went ahead with purchasing this lens. It was shipped two days later and I immediately performed several test to check sharpness, IQ, and BQ. What can i say, Sigma and their quality control has done it again. the lens was loud and not as sharp as i thought it would be. Soft unless you are shooting at around f5.6 and lower. that is all...

Sorry, not a good lens

Janofotografia, Adorama
3 October 2011
  • Excerpt: This lens is only semi sharp at f/8, so if you need some lens sharper in lowlight this is not the choice. Otherwise, right side is almost always blurry. I send the lens to Sigma to calibrate and it returns the same.
  • Pros: Rugged, Strong Construction
  • Cons: Blurry Focus, Heavy, Slow Focus

Dreadful

Indigo-X.net, B&H Photo
16 July 2011
  • Excerpt: I bought this lens as an economical wide-angle for my Canon 5D MkII as it was priced dramatically under a comparable L-series fast wide angle prime. It gives a wide view angle alright, one with a LOT of optical distortion, more than the lens preset in Lightroom could correct for most of the test shots I took. The image quality and clarity, even at f/22 just isn't up to par with what a 5D can produce with better glass in front of the sensor.
  • Pros: Super-wide view angle
  • Cons: Optical distortion, Poor autofocus, Poor image quality

A big disappointment

Briarcliff Baron, B&H Photo
17 September 2010
  • Excerpt: What attracted me to this lens was the low-light possibilities, plus I needed a wide-angle anyway. Mixed reviews on the lens gave me hesitation, but a photographer-friend who shoots with a D700 raved about Sigma lenses, so I ordered the Sigma 20mm 1.8. It proved, over 5 testing opportunities, to be a great disappointment, and I have exchanged it. These remarks: for low-light, absolutely useless.
  • Cons: Blurry Focus, Poor in Low Light

Don't Like The Sigma 20mm f/1.8

deeshooter, B&H Photo
16 June 2008
  • Excerpt: I have used everything from 35mm up to 8x10 view cameras. Shot weddings for 25+ years. Have approx 40 years experience behind a camera. Thought I would get a fast, wide prime for good image quality shooting low light / available light shots. Don't like this lens. Images are soft at best. First lens was horrible; second lens is barely acceptable. It's big and heavy. Don't care for the focusing ring which rotates as the lens focuses. Worst purchase I have ever made.
  • Cons: Blurry Focus, Heavy

Sounds good on paper . . .

John Kahrs, Amazon

  • Summary: I'm amazed at how inferior this lens is. It looks good. It feels good, and I like the focus clutch mechanism. The specs are great and just what I wanted for my EOS 10D: a wide, fast, fixed focal length lens. I had never bought a third party lens before. Images from this lens plagued with bad detail, poor contrast, and the out-of-focus areas are harsh and filled with unpleasant artifacts. I never think twice about bokeh, whether its bad or good, but this is bad.
