NOT FULL-FRAME COMPATIBLE
19 June 2012
Summary: Great focus, good lens, sharp image, not full-frame. Bought this for the Canon 5d Mark iii, Should have guessed this but this lens couldn't be less full-frame compatible. Black frame around 18mm, black corners in 50mm, unusable. I thought I looked on Sigma's website about Full-Frame compatibility but I must have misread, sending it back. Will update rating if good customer service.
Summary: As a professional wedding photographer I have owned many cameras and lenses. I've always chosen my equipment carefully, wanting both performance and value. Although I used primarily Nikon products, I have purchased several Sigma lenses over the years, mainly because they cost much less than Nikkor lenses. Unfortunately you get what you pay for. This year I've had two Sigma lenses fail. Both were less than three years old. The first had an autofocus problem.
Fabulous lens if not for the front-focus and random overexposure problems...

Summary: I purchased this lens in spite of the possibility of receiving one of the "faulty" lenses I'd read about in other reviews. Unfortunately I seem to have bad luck. I kept the lens for nearly a month, hoping it was my camera (I have a Nikon D40) but I tried it on a Nikon D200 and got the same disappointing results. If one were to merely glance at the photos, they would probably not notice anything wrong.
Summary: Perhaps I was unlucky and got one of the bad ones but I found this lens completely unreliable. My first issue is the auto-focus (on canon 40D). I had more missed shots with this lens than I've ever had with any other..pretty slow AF also. I found the chromatic abberations unacceptable on a great number of shots as well. On the other hand, I took some beautiful macro shots with this lens. Particularly using live view with manual focus...fantastic.
Summary: It looks very solid, like old one which I had before from Sigma EX series, but after taking just few test photos, AF stoped working and left only manual (but dodgy) mode ... not sure if this is only this one or all of them but not so nice when you have brande new lens, which you should trust and it .... Photos looks very sharp, a bit too slow for auto focus (before it broken) ... nice solid feel, I will see after guaranty repair.
Summary: I've received one copy of this through amazon, not through a vendor and when compared to my tamron 17-50 2.8, this one is blurry and soft at 2.8. Before I purchased this lens, I emailed sigma and they claim this lens in some European magazines report this lens is sharper then the tamron 17-50 2.8, however, after getting a soft copy, I emailed sigma with sample shots with comparison to Tamron, and Sigma never replied.
Summary: I went through two copies of this lens. The first copy had a front-focus problem approaching 20mm. I sent sample shots to Sigma, and they directed me to simply return the lens to Amazon rather than have it serviced. So, I exchanged it (big points to Amazon for making that so easy!), and the second copy front-focussed by approximately 8mm. That's not nearly as bad, of course, but for close-up photography, it meant few keepers.
Summary: I so very much wanted to use this lens. I actually tried two of them here from Amazon. The first one simply could not autofocus on pretty much anything. If I manually focused the images were really very nice. Good sharp lens. The extreme corners are a bit soft and don't really sharpen up until about f/8. There is quite a bit of chromatic aberation at 18mm. The performance seems quite acceptable for a wide angle lens of this type.
