Reviews and Problems with Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC MACRO /HSM

worse than kit lens
22 January 2014
Summary: This lens did not meet my expectations of being better than my kit lens, Nikon 18-55mm. It was very slow to focus and many pictures came out blurry. I expected it to do better in lower light situations like indoors. Also the color in the pictures was off. It was shipped quickly and the seller has been great so far. We are in communications on making an exchange.
Summary: BEWARE THIS LENS ITS JUNK. FIRST OF ALL ITS SUPPOSED TO BE AN F/2.8 LENS WHICH MEANS IT SHOULD BE FAST AND GOOD FOR PORTRAITS. WELL ITS FOCUSING IS LOUSY AND ITS NOT FAST. ADORAMA SAYS ITS NEW BUT THEY SHIPPED IT TO ME IN SOME REGULAR BOX WITH MANUALS WHICH AM NOT EVEN SURE BELONGS TO THE CAMERA. EVEN AMAZON WOULD NOT TAKE IT AS A TRADE IN FOR NEW STATUS, SO GO FIGURE. THIS IS CAMERA I BOUGHT JUST THIS PAST JANUARY. I TRIED TO RETURN AFTER 30 DAYS THEY REFUSED.
Summary: I've tried three copies of this lens. Two from Amazon. Both have significant front focus problems between 30-50mm focal length. It makes the close up "macro" functionality useless. Portraits at f/2.8 are useless because nothing looks like it's in focus. This is a huge disappointment because this is the only lens that I know of in this price range with a 2.8 constant aperture and HSM. I've sent both copies back. I also went to the local camera store in SF here, Calumet.

Summary: I bought this lens last week and I received today. Generally, Sigma lens has good optical function and good price. But If you get good condition brand new sigma lens, that will be great. Bye the way, it is very hard that you can get that condition brand new lens. Lots of Brand New Sigma lens have Front/back focussing problem. And my Five friends have sigma lens and they had same problem with their lens, If you have not that problem, you are lucky.
Summary: Well, I was excited about the review comparrisons between this, the Canon EF-S 17-85mm, and the Tameron equivalent. It was supposed to be very high sharpness, and nice bokeh compared to canon and just better all around than Tameron. I have heard (and read on here) that quality control is hit or miss and that you sometimes have to go through two or three before getting a good one. Well, to me that screams P.O.S.
Summary: I liked the photos I took with this lens. THe macro is just fantastic. After a week I started having problems when the camera would not fire and the display would show F-- . The lens metal connectors were not sitting right on the camera connectors. It had to be twisted a little to connect with the camera body connectors otherwise it would not fire. I returned it to Amazon.
Summary: I got my copy a couple weeks back. Whenever I used the autofocus feature, the photos look quite blurry comparing to my 50mm/1.8 prime lens. Amazon has been very good in its customer service and sent me another copy right away, without charging me. I will test it out and bump up the rating if it does better.
