Lens Test: Sigma 18-50 f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM

  • Excerpt: Introduced in 2008, this lens is a step up from a kit zoom but still has much in common with the kit glass from Canon and Nikon. Like the big guys, the Sigma offers image stabilization, a near-silent HSM focusing motor, and a street price of around $200.Sigma’s 18–50mm does them better, however, on several fronts: It’s faster, with top-drawer glass (three aspheric and two low-dispersion elements), a stationary barrel, and metal lensmount.

REVIEW: Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM

  • Excerpt: ePHOTOzine's expert Gary Wolstenholme takes a long look at one of Sigma's zoom lenses. The Sigma 18-50mm sports a wider aperture than many 'kit' lenses and optical stabilisation, so may be a popular choice for those looking either for a direct replacement for such a lens, or an upgrade. It is a little larger and heavier than most kit lenses, possibly due to the faster aperture of f/2.8.
  • Pros: Internal focus and zoom, Optical Stabilisation, Good resolution at wider apertures, Low distortion
  • Cons: Fingers tend to catch on rotating focus ring, Resolution falloff at smaller apertures

Sigma AF 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC HSM OS (Nikon) - Review / Test Report

photozone.de
30 July 2010
  • Conclusion: The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM left us with mixed feelings. Physically it is no doubt a welcome step-up from Nikon's own entry-level offerings. The build quality is on a very high level for this lens class. The only issue here is the focus ring that rotates during AF. Thanks to HSM the AF itself is quiet and reasonably fast and the optical stabilization is a welcome feature even at short focal lengths.

18-50 mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM

  • Excerpt: Originally posted 2009-09-04 on Optyczne.pl In March 2009 Sigma released a new lens – Sigma 18-50 mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM. I must admit I was surprised about this novelty and the first thought that crossed my mind when I saw its parameters was: “what for?”. Sigma has two quite good lenses in its offer, which overlap the range and brightness of the new lens. I’m talking about Sigma 17-70 mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro and Sigma 18-50 mm f/2.8 EX DC Macro.
  • Cons: Poor image quality at the edge of the frame, especially visible at the widest angle of view, Large chromatic aberration at 18 mm focal length, Noticeable coma, Quite large vignetting in the whole focal length range, Work against the bright light might be better

  • Summary: Nadal za to otwartym pozostaje pytanie dotyczące porównania Sigmy 18-50 mm OS do modeli takich jak Sigma 17-70 mm, Sigma 18-50 mm f/2.8 Macro, Tokina 16-50 mm f/2.8 czy Tamron 17-50 mm f/2.8.
