Lens Test: Sigma APO 120-300mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM

Pop Photo

  • Excerpt: Sigma has an enviable corner on the f/2.8 long telezoom market: Its massive 200–500mm and more manageable 120–300mm full-framers are the sole occupants of the niche. Now, Sigma has upgraded the latter, adding image stabilization to this pro’s 70–200mm staple on steroids. The tele regions are great for wildlife, while the zoom range and speed will enthrall sports shooters.

  • Conclusion: The big maximum aperture undoubtedly makes it a more unwieldy lens, which isn't particularly welcome news, but that will often make the difference between a comfortable shutter speed and one that produces wobbly shots. The Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM is well worth a look.

120-300 mm f/2.8 APO EX DG OS HSM

LensTip.com

  • Excerpt: Practically every optics producer has a unique lens on their offer, something which you won’t find in line-ups of its competitors. Sigma boasts several such models, mainly among its zoom telephoto devices; for example the very well-done Sigma 100-300 mm f/4 DG EX APO IF HSM was one of a kind. Currently it’s been withdrawn from the market and we hope only because its manufacturer wants to launch a stabilized successor soon.
  • Cons: unacceptable frame edges after attaching the converter,, weak performance against bright light,, necessity of using huge 105 mm filters,, lack of autofocus limiter.

Sigma AF 120-300mm f/2.8 APO EX HSM DG OS (Canon EOS) - Review / Lens Test

photozone.de
28 April 2012
  • Conclusion: The Sigma AF 120-300mm f/2.8 APO EX HSM DG OS is a refreshingly unique design. It offers the best of both worlds - the flexibility of the popular 70-200mm f/2.8 tele zoom lenses and the reach of the big 300mm f/2.8 prime lenses. The question of the day is, of course, whether it can deliver ? Well, mostly at least. The critical center performance is on an exceptionally high level and this is where it counts the most on a tele lens, of course.

  • Excerpt: High-quality telephoto lenses for DSLRs are tricky to buy. They're a huge investment, with prices starting at around £1,500 and heading sharply skywards. There are also considerable usability problems: long focal lengths require fast shutter speeds, which require large apertures, which all results in lots of heavy, fine-tuned and extremely expensive glass.
