Nice lens but not for me

Robert Schlenker, Amazon
18 January 2015
  • Summary: I tested this attractive, sturdily built lens, as soon as it arrived. My primary interest was macro photography but I spent the bulk of my time using it as a normal prime lens at typical shooting distances for photography around the house and yard. The first thing I noticed was the tight lens mount. Rotating the lens to lock it to the camera required much more than the normal effort that I experience with Nikon lenses.

just OK

  • Summary: It is a good lens, but it doesn't get close as I want. I what to be able to get real close and this le doesn't do it. I'm still evaluating the lens, but unless I can get an adapter that allows me to get closer it was a waste of money

  • Excerpt: I gave this one a try after seeing Sigma really changing its lineup and making some stellar lenses.. Perhaps the one I got was a dud, but I didn't want to send it back for another copy so I went with the Nikon. This one is good, but the images don't pop like those from shooting with the Nikon, and the focus doesn't seem as accurate. Comes with extras and a lower price than the Nikon, so worth a try for you to see for yourself.

I may have received a faulty/poor quality unit.

boredus, Amazon
31 December 2014
  • Summary: Just to get it out the way immediately, I am returning this lens because I suspect I have a poor/faulty unit. The reason I am returning it is because I am struggling to get decent colour/light in images. When taking pictures of people or objects 20 - 30 meters away, the image is always dark. I have to drop ISO and shutter speed to get bright images and these are taken in good light conditions.

Bit hit and miss - think i got a bad copy.

Mr Penguin, Amazon

  • Summary: i wasn't impressed with this lens especially after reading the raving reviews both online elsewhere and here on amazon. The focusing was sloppy at best and took ages to get the subject in focus. There are also three positions on the lens which stop it from focusing too far/too close so ideal if you have a certain range in mind - i did some tests and the resulting image was no different (pixel peeping) on my 24-105L with a 31mm extension tube as far as macros go.

It's an okay lens. Price reflects quality.

R.D Carver "Dill", Amazon
30 August 2014
  • Summary: It is okay.I think my problem is that I've owned a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8l Macro IS USM previously and the Canon is a far better unit and IMO worth the extra (if you can afford it). The Sigma is slower to focus and a little hit or miss and although almost imperceptible the difference is there in that (using the same EOS 7D body), I gained consistently better (more pleasing) results with the Canon Marco lens than with the Sigma.

A good lens with lots of little problems

Lucas, Amazon
17 July 2014
  • Summary: Having read up a lot about which macro lens to get and having tried them all out I knew the Canon 100mm macro f2.8L was the right lens. Unfortunately it's out of my price rage so I went with the Sigma 105mm instead. The lens is well build and feels very solid in hand, the focus is smooth and has just the right amount of resistance for me, the switches are a little stiff, but they are big enough for even the most tiny hands to get to grips with.
