I got a dud

Summary: I bought this lens through a well-known used camera distributor, so I thought the AF problem would have been checked out and fixed. Nope. Towards the end of the zoom range, it could not find its focus. It would front focus, then back focus, over and over until it seemed to just give up. I loved the image quality and everything else about the lens, but I can't have a lens that won't focus.
Summary: My oldest auto-focus lens is a 300 mm f4.5 EDF lens bought in 1988. I have used it in deserts, rain and over rough terain so it have taken a few knocks and looks like it's been through the wars but still works as well now as it did when I first bought it, so on the strenght of this I bought another pentax lens. When I first bought this lens just over a year ago I was over the moon, it is a well made sharp lens that feels good to use and gave excellant results.
Excerpt: Being a Pentaxian I had great hopes for this lens. Considering the ratng and the hype I was very excited to buy this. Expecially since I am shooting both a K-7 and K-5 bodys. This lens failed over and over again. I sent it in to Pentax for warranty service 2 times and each time they found nothing wrong and sent it back. Finally I gave up and traded it in for a Sigma f2.8 70-200mm HMS lens. Much happier with Sigma.
Summary: This lens is as sharp, and powerful as others have stated... the bokeh is incredible. I have a K10D, and I only use this lens outdoors... I've been unimpressed with it indoors when compared to my 50mm prime. I've had it since October 2010, without any problems, until 2 weeks ago (in the middle of a PAID job), and the SDM failed... I'm sending it off in hopes this will be a one time repair, but given all the reports I've read elsewhere I'm not optimistic.
Summary: When I first got this lens, my initial thoughts were "wow, this thing is gorgeous". I love the gold highlights, the green line near the mount, and the massive zoom and focus rings. The large front element makes this lens look like it means business. This thing looks fantastic. On my K-7, this lens is perfectly balanced. The large zoom ring means the lens has a wide range of space to support it, so I suspect it would be well balanced on just about any Pentax camera.
Summary: I would guess that most people that review this lens do so just after they buy it. If I wrote my review then I would have loved it as well. Now just after it is out of warranty, the SDM failed. (SDM failure is becoming a common problem with Pentax). Pentax sent me a replacement, and after 1 month of use, the SDM failed on that lens as well. I will not buy any more Pentax lenses with SDM.
Summary: I have had this lens for just over a year. I love everything about this lens except for the fact that I've had to send it in for repairs three times. The auto focus motor (SDM) just simply doesn't work. I don't use this lens all that much. I shot 6 weddings last year with it and about the same number of engagements. The auto focus motor just refuses to stay fixed. It didn't work correctly right out of the box.
Conclusion: Första intrycket mycket bra
Pros: Skärpa, kontrast, IF, kvalitetskänslan
