Lens Test: Pentax 21mm f/3.2 DA AF Limited

Pop Photo
26 December 2009
  • Excerpt: One of Pentax's exclusive Limited series lenses, the lightweight and compact 21mm f/3.2 ($470, street) features all the traits that have made a name for the Limited series: solid all-metal materials, extremely high manufacturing standards, engraved barrel markings, and uncompromising optics. Its high-tech pluses include a hybrid aspheric element and Pentax's relatively new SP coating that the company claims will make glass surfaces unusually easy to clean.

Pentax-DA 21mm F3.2

  • Summary: It is hard not to love the DA 21mm Limited. Its diminutive size and weight, its build quality and the very high image quality it delivers constantly impress. It boasts a very high level of sharpness and microcontrast and produces bright and vibrant images. Aberrations as a whole are well controlled, though barrel distortion could be lower. The particular bokeh might take some time getting used to but creates pleasing and effective images.

  • Conclusion: Mechanically well engineered and giving good resolution results across the frame and aperture range, this lens makes a nice, but not exceptional wide angle addition to the kit with virtually no space or weight penalty. A pricey headline figure, but expect to find it well discounted.
  • Pros: Compact in the extreme, Good resolution across the frame, Good build quality gives confidence in longevity
  • Cons: Some barrel distortion, Some CA when stopped well down., Price

  • Conclusion: While significantly cheaper than the original FA Limited lenses, the main drawback to the DA lenses is their price when compared to prime lenses from other manufacturers. For example, the Pentax 40/2.8 has a street price of $270. A Canon 35/2 is a stop faster and $50 cheaper at $220 and a Canon 50/1.8 is 1.5 stops faster and $185 cheaper. A full set of three Limited lenses will set you back around $1160 at today's street prices.

SLR Lens and Camera Reviews
23 October 2009
  • Excerpt: Pentax smc DA 21mm f/3.2 AL Limited is one of a series of Pentax pancake lenses the company introduced for its digital SLR cameras to fill in the gap that was left after the previous generation of K and M series lenses was discontinued. The lens was first announced at PMA2006 and is currently still in production (as of July 2009). The lens retails at ~US$450 and at this price is within budgets of amateurs and pros alike.

  • Excerpt: As we’ve already happened to mention before, Pentax is the only company on the market which enlarges very consistently its line-up of fixed-focal lenses designed for small sensors. We have especially in mind wide angle lenses which other systems simply lack; Pentax offers you such models as, for instance: the Pentax smc DA 14 mm f/2.8,the Pentax smc DA 15 mm f/4 ED AL Limited or the Pentax smc DA 21 mm f/3.2 AL Limited.
  • Cons: significant distortion for such an angle of view,, noticeable coma,, very high astigmatism,, image quality on the edge of the frame near the maximum relative aperture could have been better,, a bit too high vignetting.

Pentax SMC DA 21mm f/3.2 AL Limited - Review / Lab Test

photozone.de
28 October 2009
  • Conclusion: The Pentax SMC-DA 21mm f/3.2 AL Limited is a very good lens but it is not as special as its longer cousins (specifically the Pentax FA 31mm f/1.8 Limited) nor is this really possible because of the increasing design problems when pushing things towards wide and ultra-wide angles. The center performance is exceptionally high whereas the borders require f/5.6 to achieve very good levels.

  • Summary: Do tego dochodzi jeszcze jedna sprawa.
