GREAT LENS until the auto focus quits

BDS Photography, B&H Photo
7 March 2014
  • Excerpt: Had this in the shop once and now the autofocus is acting up AGAIN. Not sure if I could recomend this. If you get a good one then you will love it. If the AF dies it's expensive to get fixed.
  • Cons: Autofocus Failed

My 3rd copy with QC problems

Ferd, B&H Photo
26 December 2013
  • Excerpt: In all 3 copies, the front of the lens wobbles in varying degrees. The build quality is not comparable to Canon L lenses (the cost is). Auto-focus lock is horribly slow. On a positive note, the lens has a nice soft focus at 2.8 and sharp at 4.0. The color rendition and detail exceeds comparable Canon L lenses. This lens is overpriced considering the poor quality control. Pentax has some very nice lenses. This is not one of them.
  • Pros: Pleasing Colors
  • Cons: Blurry Focus, Slow Focus

Okay, certainly not great

P. Stensrud, Amazon
8 September 2013
  • Summary: Purchad used from KEH. My copy appears flawless. Pros: fast lens, useful wide angle zoom range which is limited enough to keep weight down. IQ for the in-focus portion of the photos is excellent, silent and fast SDM focusing. Cons: a bit large as expected for a constant f/2.8 zoom, bokeh is awful. This lens is excellent indoors, with or without flash, but outdoors, where the landscape stretches way out of the focal plane, I find the bokeh irritating.

Inconsistency result

DF, B&H Photo
9 December 2012
  • Excerpt: The build quality is exceptional, while optical is a mixture. In general the center sharpness is great but the borders do suffer at wide angle. My copy has some problems in auto-focus so I just decided to return it. If you could find a perfect copy then it will delivery satisfactory result.
  • Pros: Durable, Nice Bokeh, Rugged, Strong Construction
  • Cons: Blurry Focus, Heavy, Slow Focus

Quality control issue

Jeffrey A. Hamlin "jefxan", Amazon
15 March 2012
  • Summary: I have mixed feelings about this lens, I love the look fit and finish but am having problems with front and rear focus. I have a focus test chart and depending on my focal length, I could have front focus problems on the left side while rear on the right all at the same time. I have sent this lens back yesterday and already ordered another one from Emmy photo because Amazon was out of stock.

Good lens to SHOW OFF~

OXwing, B&H Photo
13 January 2012
  • Excerpt: I bought this lens for my friend's wedding in Honolulu. I bought it new from BH. The first issue: it stuck at 16-20mm, can't zoom in after one month I bought it. I fix it by hitting it; Second: Purple Fringing is horrible from F2.8-5.6. especially shotting at night. I will attach a sample picture of it. I think pentax should redesign this lens, what is the point to have the F2.8 but useless?
  • Cons: Weak Casing

False claim of being "Completely Spray Proof"

A. AlBukhari, Amazon
19 December 2011
  • Summary: Had this glass for three years took many great pix with it, but during my last trip to Niagara Falls on board Maid Of The Mist, I opted not to enclose the lens in a nylon wrap believing the lens is spray proof "not Splash Proof like the WR" after disembarking I flipped the K20D to take a look at the front element and was surprised to see that some water drops managed to seep into the supposedly "Spray Proof" lens there were several drops scattered throughout the lens on...

Not as good as competition

Spoorthy, B&H Photo
21 November 2011
  • Excerpt: For the price this lens is really not up to par compared to lens like the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 and the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8. Both are much sharper, faster focusing, and have better bokeh. Plus they are only $400 and $550. The Penax does have spectacular build and the weather proofing is fantastic hbhut for me is not worth $250-400.

Not worth the price.

Sarweswara Rao Vemula, Amazon
12 November 2011
  • Summary: This lens is decent but not great Pros: 1) Fantastic build quality 2) Colors that you get from this lens are pretty good 3) Weather Proofing just amazing Cons: 1) Very expensive comapred to sigma and tamron alternatives 2) Very big and large: Not fun to use 3) Very slow focusing. 4) Corner sharpness is very bad wide open: Its OK when stopped down 5) Center sharpness not the best either 6) Tamron is only $400 and is much much sharper Im not say that this is a bad lens.
