Excerpt: This is much like the kit version of this focal length zoom lens, but with two nice upgrades. It has a metal mount and focus shift allowing you to refine the focus in AF mode by turning the focus ring. It also comes with a hood. It's very solidly built for an inexpensive lens.
Summary: I bought this lens as a lighter weight, travel, weather resistant alternative to my Pentax 16-45mm F4, which according to various tests, should be sharper. Using www.photozone.de test site as a guide, I shot some test frames with the 18-55 at F8, between the 'sweet' focal lengths of 28-35mm.
Summary: I was greatly anticipating trying this lens after all the stellar reviews. However, my lens was awful. I'm not knocking Pentax because my other lens is fantastic; I just received a bad one. When looking through the viewfinder, there was like a gray gauze across the entire lens and it was very dark.
Excerpt: Not a bad kit lens at all. When stopped down it can be very sharp, although beware of some field curvature. Very nice build quality and weather sealing in a lens of this calibre is a very nice touch.
