Excerpt: This Focal length is ideal for the kind of photos that I take which is why I purchased it. Now I may have gotten a bad one but it's auto focusing has never been satisfactory and then the motor died. I have used the lens on K20 and K5II bodies with the same results. ......
Excerpt: Let me start by saying I'm a big Pentax fan. I've owned 3 camera bodies and own 7 different Pentax lenses. Great equipment but the SDM motors on these lenses have been an utter failure. The fanboys and Pentax PR people will tell you the issue has been fixed but don't believe it.
Summary: I purchased this lens to replace another Pentax lens, the 16- 50mm DA lens which I found to be an underperformer, given its cost. The DA 17-70mm lens has performed well and is definitely an upgrade from the 16-50mm DA lens it replaced.
Excerpt: This was my first lens purchase other than the DAL 18-55 and the DA 50-200 that came with my K-30. Overall, I'm very pleased with this lens. The photos I'm taking with this lens have been very sharp and an obvious improvement from the kit lens.
Excerpt: This lens is great for taking basic photos. It does go wider than 35mm, which is great for taking those wide, panoramic shots or shots of the whole sports field. The auto focus can be a little slow if you are changing from the 17mm to the 70mm in one jump.
Pros: Durable, Easy to Install, Easy to Use, Safe, Well Designed
Excerpt: As a Pentax K-5 owner, this lens represented the closest equivalent to the 24-105L F4 lens that I enjoyed on my friends' Canon 5D but on my Pentaxian budget. That's the full-frame zoom range that I find useful for a walk-around lens.
Excerpt: I have Sigma 17-70 zoom lens, but I wanted an equivalent lens with better optical quality. I ordered this zoom and indeed the optical quality is better in all focal lengths. However, I found that the focusing at 70 mm is hesitant and that is the reasone for giving it 3 stars.
