Olympus 300mm f/2.8 Zuiko Digital review by Ocean

Ocean, slrgear.com
30 December 2012
  • Summary: the best 300 mm I've ever used, even better the the newest Canon and Nikon stuff. But it is very heavy for a 300 mm. Optics nearly perfect!
  • Pros: extreme sharp, solid construction, even very good with converters
  • Cons: to heavy, no SWD-SF

Olympus 300mm f/2.8 Zuiko Digital review by MartinM

  • Summary: This is a really nice lens. An incredible reach paired with sharpness. A dream. IQ and build are outstanding. Weight is a topic. I had it on a hike of about an hour hanging around my neck. Not exactly what you would like to take for a long walk. The price tag is ridiculous high. I will never ever be able to afford it.
  • Pros: 600mm, f/2.8, weather sealing, IQ, size
  • Cons: price, weight

Best Glass I've Ever Owned

Frozen Feather Images, olympusamerica.com
2 April 2012
  • Summary: I'm a nature photographer, primarily photographing birds. I need a lot of power, razor-sharp quality and good performance in low light. This lens delivers. It is without question the best lens I've owned. It performs well with a 1.4 and 2.0 teleconverter, at the cost of one and two f-stops, respectively. I've lugged it (and it is a beast) from Barrow, Alaska to Antarctica. It's performed well in the steamy Amazon basin and at -40 F in mid-winter in the boreal forest.

Great Lens

PK-E30, olympusamerica.com
13 June 2011
  • Summary: I rented this beauty for this year's Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. This lens is simply amazing. build quality is almost tank like, although I was more careful with it than a newborn baby. The focus range selector is great and performs very well. The focus itself is responsive although it has a tendency to be a bit touchy. When coupled with my E-30 it produced stunning pictures.

  • Summary: Amazingly sharp, very high contrast (improves slightly by f3.5), will stand the EC-14 without degradation, and the EC-20 with minimal degradation wide open - better than the competition from Nikon or Canon. AF is fast, despite not being a SWD lens. Ideal for sports, longer range portrait/fashion and wildlife. Superbly made, but heavy.
  • Pros: Sharpness, Contrast, fantastic performance with teleconverters
  • Cons: Heavy

  • Summary: At f2.8 efl 600mm during the day it is Handholdable on a e510. and the Bokeh is a WOW! Fast Focusing, and sharp imho. Posted my test shots here: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1022&message=25484814 Did I say wide open f2.8 is a WoW! lol Yes, and I did carry it around all afternoon in the sun. And it was really rare that I missed a focus. * Surprisingly easy to shoot with.
  • Pros: Size for 600mm f2.8, and f2.8 performance
  • Cons: none
