So far, so good...

Excerpt: Oops - my review, below, was meant for the series III version of this converter. I did try the series II on my 300mm AF-S f4, but they did not work well together. Could have been a defective converter, so I returned it and got the series III. Plenty of people get great results with this version, so I won't disparage it.
Excerpt: I haven't fully shaken this out yet, but so far is equal or better than the previous version (series II). I am using it with my D7100, 70-200 f4.0 and my AF-S 300mm f4.0. Yes, it can be used with the 300, but you need to set the custom menu controls to use the lens aperture ring instead of the command dial, and use manual exposure. Sometimes worth the hassle, but it's much easier to use my 1.7x with that lens.
Summary: I bought this as a package (gently used) with the Nikon 80-400mm, and with that combo I can effectively shoot 560mm still clear and sharp. I know there are after-market brands a bit cheaper, but when it comes to glass you really do get what you pay for. This is worth the extra $$$$. Be forewarned that it doesn't work with all Nikon lenses but they do have charts showing which one it will work with and which ones it won't.
