Nikon 50mm f/1.2 AIS Nikkor review by Airy

Airy, slrgear.com

  • Summary: A lens with a dual personality : At 1.2-1.4, you get a sharp center but the whole pic looks veiled and dreamy. I could get "underwater" rendering without ever getting wet. From f/2, it is as sharp as any modern 50mm lens, and handles flare well.
  • Pros: Sharpness from f/2, bokeh
  • Cons: High barrel distortion, some CA

Go for it

  • Excerpt: Formidable lens, well built. I use it professionally on sets, at around ƒ=8. Very little distortion, extremely good sharpness. I mount it on both my Nikon D810 & my Canon 1DsMkII: it works well on both, but the assisted focus light in the Nikon's viewfinder is a great help in dark situations.
  • Pros: Consistent Output, Durable, Nice Bokeh, Rugged, Strong Construction
  • Cons: Heavy

2) but I absolutely love using it

  • Summary: This lens is extremely hard to work with because it is manual focus and has such a low f stop (1.2) but I absolutely love using it! It works magic with photos! Just got to work on manual focusing!

A Very Interesting Lens

Tycoop, Amazon
6 February 2015
  • Summary: This is a bit of a quirky lens, in a good way...in that if you learn to get a feel for what it does (and doesn't do), you will get some great results. It's absolutely NOT a lens that produces consistent results through its aperture range. One shot at f/1.2 and you'll see what I mean.

This lens has no equal! I love it

  • Excerpt: First off I have to tell you I am in no way affiliated with Nikon or subsidiaries, nor am I receiving any compensation for this review. I am a semi-pro photographer that has been shooting since the film days and I can tell you this lens is fantastic.
  • Pros: Consistent Output, Durable, Easily Interchangeable, Lightweight, Nice Bokeh, Rugged, Strong Construction

Great Lens

Matt, B&H Photo
23 January 2015
  • Excerpt: Awesome lens. Sharp focus, crisp lines, clean and unique bokeh. Sure it's not as fancy as the Canon 50mm f/1.2. The trade off is instead of cheap plastic and electronics that can fail, you have a solid lens made of steel and glass.
  • Pros: Consistent Output, Durable, Nice Bokeh, Rugged, Strong Construction
  • Cons: Tough To Attach

It's got that X Factor

Robert Delsol, Amazon

  • Summary: I've always had a 50 prime (1.4 or 1.8) in my bag. I've used four different ones, all competent, but I never got excited about using any of them. A handy focal length for sure, but kind of too "normal." But then I tried out this lens. Wow. It produces images that have a different feel all together.

Outstanding Lens

JohnT, Nikon

  • Summary: This is an outstanding lens. The build quality is unmatched by todays plastic lenses. One other excellent feature is (a must in my opinion) the all metal HS-12 circular lens hood which snaps into my 52mm B&W XS-Pro MRC nano circular polarizer (or any other polarizer/filter).
