Very Bad Focus Shifting

Steven, B&H Photo
13 August 2014
  • Excerpt: This is a great lens but it is very important to understand that it has a VERY bad issue with focus shifting at apertures between f/4-5.6. I typically use my 24-70 but ended up dropping it and had to switch to the 28mm. This was the first time I used this lens at apertures of 4-5.6 and it performed very poorly. Before purchasing this lens, I would highly recommend looking into the issue of focus shifting with this lens.
  • Pros: Lightweight

Reasonably Sharp, Build Quality Suspect

Preston, Adorama
18 April 2013
  • Excerpt: I returned four samples to Amazon before getting one from Adorama that I did not consider defective. Common issues I found are a gritty feel to the manual focus, pronounced chromatic aberration and poor sharpness. All the defective models a strange, tarnished orange look to the gold Nikon lettering on the lens, so maybe all came from a bad production run.
  • Pros: Close Focus, Good contrast, Light weight, Sharp
  • Cons: Poor build quality, Slow auto focus

Amazing Performance But Feels Inexpensive

Preston S. Page "Preston Page", Amazon
17 March 2013
  • Summary: UPDATE 4/21/2013 First, two stars off for build quality. I'm not talking about the plastic filter threads others complain about, which really is very disappointing to find on a lens costing more than $50. I'm complaining about the basic build robustness and Nikon's poor quality control that led be to return four copies to Amazon because each had two or more of these defects: __ Extreme amount of lateral chromatic aberration.

The lens has limitations

Ron, B&H Photo
6 December 2012
  • Excerpt: My copy had inaccurate focusing which required an AF fine-tune of -5 on the D800. The focus problem was bad enough that I would not recommend this lens for a body that does not have AF fine-tune. I cannot verify this at time of writing because my D3200 is at my other residence. The other frequently mentioned problem of focus shift at apertures between f/1.8 and f5.6 is not evident in my copy. My main lens is the AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR.

Wanted to love it - expected more...

Colin, B&H Photo
8 November 2012
  • Excerpt: Just wasn't [$] worth of sharpness wide open. AF adjustments got it close but not what you'd expect at this price. Thought about getting another sample but returned. Pros are size, sharpness stopped down and ridiculous close focus.
  • Pros: Close Focus, Nice Bokeh
  • Cons: Not sharp wide open

  • Summary: I really didn't care for this lens.. I was under the impression it zoomed and see know point to wide/prime lens.. I guess if your a landscape photographer or someone who only needs wide shots but for me it was not what i was searching for.. I really didn't care for the pictures that it produced either.. They weren't soft nor sharp just seemed blahh.. I went ahead and bought the 24-85mm zoom lens and it so much better then this one.

NB, Amazon
3 August 2013
  • Summary: Das relativ neue NIKKOR 28mm 1:1,8G hab ich zusätzlich zu meinen vorab an der D800 getesteten Objektive 50mm 1:1,8G und 85mm 1:1,8G gekauft.
