Lives up to reputation

  • Excerpt: I am a long time serious amateur and I have coveted this lens for a long time. I specifically waited on the newer version and the improvements in the VR capability were well worth the wait. Sharpness, bokeh and expected Nikon build quality are all there. I use this lens for wildlife and sports on a D800, but mainly on a D7100 to take advantage on the increased lens prospective (300mm-600mm).
  • Pros: Consistent Output, Durable, Easily Interchangeable, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Nice Bokeh, Rugged, Strong Construction

Yes it focuses with the TC 20 III

  • Excerpt: I just wanted to update on the many old reviews here. With the D800 and the TC20 III, this lens focuses perfectly under any light condition. Furthermore, IQ with said converter is excellent thus making this lens a more than viable 800mm alternative. If even more magnification is desired simply crop the D800 to DX for an astounding 1200mm f8 with no reduction in IQ while still maintaining 16 mp. NICE!!!!
  • Pros: Consistent Output, Durable, Easily Interchangeable, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Nice Bokeh, Rugged, Strong Construction
  • Cons: Heavy

A phenomenal member of the Nikkor line-up !

  • Summary: This lens is beyond description, its one of the lenses that can hardly get any criticism. I personally don't own it, but I have played a lot with it in the camera store in my city. The 200-400mm f/4 VR (First version) is as close as it can be to the VRII, except that the second version performs better on the edges when you step up the aperture, let alone it has the new mystic Nano crystal coating on the front element !

Great Lens for Wildlife Photography

Jim, B&H Photo
18 September 2013
  • Excerpt: Recently returned from a trip to Alaska. I bought this lens a month before the trip to great an idea of the best use of settings on my camera to capture images. Got great shots of eagles, owls, moose, whales and sea lions. The F 4.0 lets in plenty of light, the focusing is amazingly fast, even on cloudy/foggy days (lots of those in Alaska). Note that this lens is very large and heavy. The 14 inch length does not include the five inch hood.
  • Pros: Fast / accurate auto-focus, Rugged
  • Cons: Bulky

  • Excerpt: Loving this monster so far, takes a little getting used to the size and weight but on a gimbal mount it is a joy to use. Only had it a few weeks so my experience with it is limited but looking forward to many years of use.

Excellent Lens

  • Excerpt: Pros: Great optics in this lens, focuses very quick and very sharp images. Very balanced on tripod and easy to control. One of the best lenses that Nikon has constructed. Works extremely well with the 1.7X & 2.0X teleconverters. Cons: A little heavy and acquired to handle hand holding.
  • Pros: Consistent Output, Durable, Easily Interchangeable, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Rugged, Strong Construction
  • Cons: Heavy
