Nikon AF-S 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED

What Digital Camera
4 November 2013
  • Summary: Nikon offers a surprisingly large number of lenses that start at 18mm; 18-55mm, 18-105mm, 18-140mm, 18-200mm and 18-300mm; but despite having the smallest zoom range the 18-35mm version is the best lens overall.
  • Pros: Full-frame coverage; Impeccable MTF performance; 18mm maximum coverage; Virtually silent AF; Full-time MF option; Lightweight
  • Cons: Modest maximum aperture; Limited 2x zoom range; Fiddly lens hood

  • Conclusion: The AF-S Nikkor 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED is a light lens that covers a wide-angle field of view and offers a modest zoom, but it's not the best that Nikon has to offer.
  • Pros: Very sharp. Inexpensive. Light. Compact.
  • Cons: Limited zoom range. Noticeable distortion. Slower aperture.

Nikkor AF-S 18-35mm f3.5-4.5G ED

Camera Labs
1 May 2013
  • Summary: The Nikon 18-35/3.5-4.5G is a surprisingly good lens at a reasonable price. Very good center performance is accompanied by good performance in the DX-corners and decent performance in the FX-corners. Stop down to lift performance in the corners of a full-frame 36MP D800 towards good levels.
  • Pros: Good image quality in the DX image-circle., Weather sealing at the lens-mount., Quiet AF operation., Small package., Reasonably priced.
  • Cons: Needs stopping down to f8 to produce good FX-corners., Barrel-distortions at 18mm hard to correct., Slow AF.

  • Summary: Want an ultra light, ultrahigh performance ultrawide zoom for full-frame and 35mm Nikon? Bingo, your ship just came in. Forget the clumsy older 18-35 AF-D, which sells for not much less money.
