Conclusion: In keeping with the small build, the filter thread is a mere 52mm. Featuring internal focusing, the front element neither extends nor rotates during focusing, which is a bonus when using rotation-specific filters such as a circular polariser. Extras include a lens hood and soft pouch.
Excerpt: While I hope to create a full Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G AF-S DX Lens evaluation, my first priority is to include results from this lens in the lens comparison tools. This page currently exists because it is required by the database and content management systems for the posting of those standard test results.
Excerpt: Wouldn't it be great to get some serious telephoto zoom reach without filling up most of your gadget bag with a big clunky lens? The Nikon Nikkor AF-S DX VR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED fits the bill with a remarkably compact design, and it's less than half the weight of its big brother, the Nikon 70-300mm VR.
Excerpt: The main reason for the Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6 AF-S VR DX is the addition of the VR technology, and the first thing that strikes you about this lens is the light weight. At a meagre 355g, its really some achievement to get all it offers into such a small lens. The zoom ring takes up around 2/3 of the length of the lens, while the rarely used focus ring has a tiny space on the front.
Summary: An affordable telephoto zoom lens for Nikon's DX-format DSLR cameras.Designed as a second lens for DSLR kits, the AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED offers an affordable option for owners of Nikon's DX-format bodies who want a medium tele zoom lens. Compact and light in weight, this lens is made almost entirely from plastic - right down to the mounting plate.
Pros: You want a lightweight telephoto zoom lens for Nikon's entry-level DSLR bodies., You require performance levels to match the standard of Nikon's entry and lower mid-level DSLRs.
Cons: You require fast autofocusing in low light levels (this isn't a lens for shooting indoor sports)., You need close focusing capabilities.
Conclusion: The Nikkor AF-S 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED DX VR delivered a very sound performance with very few weaknesses. The resolution characteristic is generally very good and neither CAs not distortions are something to worry about. The vignetting is a bit more pronounced at 135mm @ f/5 but otherwise not a real problem. The bokeh (out-of-focus blur) is naturally a bit underdeveloped due to the slow max. aperture but apart from this limitation is seems pretty smooth.
