Summary: I just have bought this lens, took couple of shots; result is AMAZING!!. My suggestion, you should have this lens on your shopping list if you don't have one. Auto-focus response is quick & colors are just perfect.
The best portrait lens for Nikon DX format DSLR cameras

Summary: This is the best lens if you need something classy for portraits and own a DX format camera. The "normal" 50 mm lens fails to be just not so normal due to the conversion factor. My Nikon has a crop factor of 1.5 so a 50 mm becomes a 75mm lens but this 35mm is prefect at 52.5 mm. No doubt the bokeh is better with 50 mm lens and the manufacturing quality is more sturdy as it gives a better detail.
Versitle little lens, grest for low-light situations
22 August 2012
Summary: I purchased the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 for use with my D3100 DX camera. I should also mention that I have only been experimenting with photography and a SLR camera for about 3 months now. I was originally in the market for a 55mm before my cousin pointed out the difference between DX and FX. This lens was exactly what I was looking for! I love being able to shoot wide open in low lighting situations and love the bokeh it creates in my portraits. The AF with this lens is ok...
Very sharp. Auto focus is quiet but is still audible. Must use manual control when using a D3200.

Summary: This lens is sharper than the stock 18-55mm that comes with the Nikon D3200 but it does not have VR. I have one major issue with this lens. When I connect this to my Nikon D3200 and set the camera to "auto" it ALWAYS sets the aperture to f1.8 for every picture. Many pictures have be ruined because the focal plane was too narrow. I could take a picture of a face and only the nose and eyes are in focus. Essentially, "auto" on the D3200 cannot be used with this lens.
Summary: f/1.8 has a reeeeeeally shallow depth of field, in general. I could not even imagine using a f/1.4 wide open and have anything in focus. Even the smaller breath is enough to move you away from the subject and make you miss the shoot... Now about the product (the reason for this review). Fast, reliable, sharp, and fast to focus. Gave me excellent movies too.
