Lens Test: Nikon 18–140mm f/3.5–5.6G DX ED VR AF-s

Pop Photo

  • Excerpt: Released in August 2013, Nikon’s 18–140mm f/3.5–5.6G DX ED VR for APS-C bodies replaces its popular 18–135mm f/3.5–5.6G zoom, adding Vibration Reduction and 5mm of reach at the long end. This utility zoom lacks the ranges of Nikon’s 18–200mm or 18–300mm f/3.5–5.6G VR all-in-ones, but the lens ($597, street) is lighter and more compact and—for our money—handles noticeably better than either of those two.

  • Conclusion: The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens shows a lot of distortion, but Nikon cameras can correct that.
  • Pros: Sharp through most of range. 7.8x zoom range. Optically stabilized. Fairly compact.
  • Cons: Loads of distortion. Edge performance could be better. Hood not included.

  • Excerpt: The Nikon company is undoubtedly leading the way when it comes to general-purpose lenses designed for reflex cameras with APS-C/DX sensors. They have been launching devices with focal lengths starting from 18 mm and ending at several dozen or even several hundred millimeters quite regularly. They’ve been producing a few versions of the “kit” 18-55 mm, the 18-70 mm, very solidly made, the plastic 18-105 mm and the 18-135 mm.

AF-S Nikkor 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED VR

PhotoReview
23 January 2014
  • Summary: The focal length range, which spans from moderately wide to modest telephoto, makes this lens a good general-purpose lens, particularly for travellers and family snapshooters who want a single, all-in-one solution. Fully retracted it's 40mm longer and 295 grams heavier than the alternative 18-55mm kit lens but nonethtless feels well balanced on the D5300.

Expert Review

  • Summary: Dobry obraz całości psują tylko denerwujące oszczędności Nikona. Skoro ponad dwa razy tańszy model 18–105 mm VR może być sprzedawany w zestawie z osłoną przeciwsłoneczną i futerałem, to dlaczego droższy 18–140 mm VR jest oferowany tylko z dekielkami?
  • Pros: użyteczny zakres ogniskowych,, bardzo dobra rozdzielczość w centrum kadru,, niewielka podłużna aberracja chromatyczna,, prawidłowo korygowana aberracja sferyczna,, niewielki astygmatyzm,, cichy, celny i szybki autofokus,, świetna stabilizacja.
  • Cons: spora poprzeczna aberracja chromatyczna na najdłuższej ogniskowej,, dystorsja beczkowa na szerokim kącie i zauważalna poduszka na dłuższych ogniskowych,, brak jakichkolwiek dodatków w zestawie.
