Summary: Lens is fantastic to use on my DX Sensor Camera body. The 24mm appears to be 36mm on the D7000 making it perfect for street photography and shots that may need to be a bit more wide. Would highly recommend.
Summary: I've owned both and I don't think either the 24/F2 AIS or the 24 F/2.8 AIS are that great. I've read many places that the "crown jewels" of the wide angle line up from Nikon are the 28's. I shoot with the 28 F/2 AIS and it is truly magnificent. Extreme sharpness from foreground to infinity. I just wish the 24's were like it. This 24 likes to flare like mad. Don't need flare in the pics. So, I just can't give it a high rating at all.
Summary: this is my lens.. if I'm taking my Nikon F3 for that nostalgic street hunts. it's wide, small, fast & sturdy. the mechanics are perfect. I still own this lens and it runs smoothly until now. Optics are good (especially for its era), but no better than any modern lens. Use a modern (digital) body? a lenskit would outperforms this lens in terms of image quality. I keep it for that nostalgic moments. If you're a collector, then it's a must have.
Summary: amazing, how a lens so small can produce such exceptional image quality.a first class professional results lens.im sure the much more expensive 24mm is better, but i challenge anyone to prove it on a print,or computer moniter.
Summary: I really wanted a prime wide lens and 24mm is perfect. Gets exactly what I want in a photo. I love how accessible it is. Though the focus isn't perfect it takes sharp photos really quickly. I highly recommend it as a prime lens for those who want a great wide angle lens.
Summary: I have both the 16-85mm and the 24mm f2.8D lens, using a heavy tripod and shooting at f5.6 thru f11, I have found that they compare favorably. The big advantage of the 24mm is its weight and size. Focus speed is very close, can't really measure, overall I am happy with the purchase and plan to eventually use this lens on a FX body Richard
I would recommend this lens, but it's not for everyone.

Summary: A fantastic wide angle with a wide aperture. Fairly close focus abilities. I purchased for the use of reversing the lens for crazy macro focus and it works awesome for that! Far less flaring and ghosting than other lenses I've used for this purpose. With extension tubes you can produce insanely close macro shots. For general use it's really nice as well, fast accurate focus and good handling.
