Nikon AF Zoom Nikkor 24-85mm f/2.8-4D IF Lens Review
SLR Lens and Camera Reviews
6 June 2009
Summary: Nikon AF Zoom Nikkor 24-85mm f/2.8-4D IF tries to be everything a photographer might want to have in an all-purpose standard zoom lens. Unfortunately, it falls short a bit in some areas. Image resolution, while excellent at wider end of the zoom range degrades towards the longer end, particularly around borders. Rather abysmal performance at closeup distances as wekk as pronounced barrel at 24mm and pincushion at 85mm distortion do not help either.
Excerpt: While I hope to create a full Nikon 24-85mm f/2.8-4D AF Lens evaluation, my first priority is to include results from this lens in the lens comparison tools. This page currently exists because it is required by the database and content management systems for the posting of those standard test results.
Nikkor AF 24-85mm f/2.8-4 D IF (FX) - Review / Test Report

Conclusion: The Nikkor AF 24-85mm f/2.8-4 looks a bit dated on the D3x, both in terms of appearance and performance. The lens s capable of delivering excellent resolution in the image center when stopped down a little, but the borders and corners perform rather poor at large apertures. The lens needs to be stopped down to f/5.6 or f/8 to achieve at least good resolution across the frame.
Nikkor AF 24-85mm f/2.8-4 D IF - Review / Test Report
31 October 2008
Conclusion: The Nikkor AF 24-85mm f/2.8-4D IF is an very good standard zoom and it was the right decision by Nikon to discontinue its younger cousin (AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED) rather than this lens. The resolution characteristics is very good to excellent throughout the zoom range with a sweet spot towards the wide end. The contrast suffers somewhat at large aperture settings, specifically at 85mm, but is lifted significantly when stopping down a little.
