Summary: The shift feature provides a limited degree of perspective control. Shift lenses allow to counteract the effect by tilting the lens off its horizontal axis. By doing so the projected image “rectangle” on the film or sensor plane gets distorted to a trapezoid which compensates the effect. I would have to say that this shift lens does an amazing job of keeping the aspect correct.
Excellent for those who know what it is and how to use it.

Summary: Please note that the items here have not been specified whether they are the version I or II of the lens. The newer version offers more axes and degrees of movement. Image quality is better. The filter thread in the version II is 82 mm, that is how you can tell which version you are looking at. My experience of the version II is very good. The image quality is absolutely superb, The control of the DOF needs some reading.
Summary: Canon really earned their money with this lens! It is difficult and expensive to manufacture, and has a large aspherical lens as the front element for performance approaching apochromats. Version II of this lens has just been released, but it sells for twice the price. Of course, the TS-24mm has long been standard for architectural photograpers, but don't forget about the tilts! Tilts make possible a range of compositons many artists would overlook.
This quality, yet heavy lens allows you to really change your perspective!

Summary: In architectural photography- this lens compensates for the appearance that upright lines, such as the sides of buildings, windows, etc- are leaning away from you as they climb above eye-level. This effect can also be used in a side-to-side fashion to allow the final image to have the perspective as if taken straight on, even when the image was taken while standing off-center. Another trick with this lens is to create a "slice of focus.
Expensive, but worth it if you are an architectural photographer

Summary: When you photograph buildings from the ground they appear narrow at the top and wider at the bottom - which is the reason this lens and it's brethren exist. This is NOT an inexpensive lens, especially when you consider it is useful only for a small set of conditions. Solid as a rock, extremely well made, beautiful, clear optics. Killer lens.
