Good focal distance fror 7D

20 December 2012
  • Excerpt: Bought this lens for shooting closer up than my 28-135 USM lens could reach for car shows and cruise-in's where you want to be closer the your subject. Have had manual focus limitation problems, where it couldn't "reach" good focus. Do like having a lighweight lens for carrying around and less worry dollars wise, but will probably not buy another [*] Canon lens because of this example.
  • Pros: Easily Interchangeable, Lightweight
  • Cons: Blurry Focus, Weak Casing

Beginners must have.

  • Excerpt: Good image stabilization, poor construction, poor manual focusing, poor bokeh, medium optics, BUT: great price and great range. I use it because sometimes my 28mm f1.8 is not wide enough.
  • Pros: Range
  • Cons: Blurry Focus, Poor in Low Light, Weak Casing

Cheapo Lens for a Cheapo Price

Zach B., B&H Photo
9 November 2011
  • Excerpt: I bought this lens for use on my T2i, knowing full well that it's junk. Optical quality is nothing special and you can get advanced point and shoots with better. Focus speed isn't great and build quality is seriously as low as it gets with a Canon product. I bought this for uses which don't require quality and have a high likelihood of breaking a lens. Frankly though, I wouldn't be shocked if it breaks itself.
  • Pros: Easily Interchangeable, Lightweight
  • Cons: Mediocre Quality, Poor in Low Light, Slow Focus, Weak Casing

Ok for Beginners

Jweavercma, Canon

  • Conclusion: I received this lens with my Canon T2i as a birthday present. In the beginning, I couldn't really tell the difference between this and any other lens. As I gained experience, I found out exactly how limited this lens can be. I found out that it absolutely hates anything but the most perfect lighting conditions. If your subject is slightly too bright or slightly too dark it refuses to focus, leaving you to focus manually which can be a bother under certain circumstances.
  • Pros: light, good "kick around" lens
  • Cons: Slow auto-focus, Poor build quality

Casual Users Only!

Scott G, B&H Photo
4 March 2009
  • Excerpt: My rating is based on an overall comparison of all available lenses and does not reflect the price of this lens. This lens is intended for users who aren't after top notch image quality and for them this lens offers an excellent value especially when purchased in a kit. For them, I'd rate this lens about 3 1/2-4 Stars Overall image quality approaches good for most situations although it seems to suffer quite a bit of purple fringing when high contrast exists.
  • Pros: Lightweight
  • Cons: Weak Casing

Would never have bought it

Canonrebelrouser, B&H Photo

  • Excerpt: Inside, close quarters, sometimes low-lighting situations. I work for a newspaper. Focus is slow and inconsistant, pictures are not sharp by any means when used with my XSi. The 28-135mm lense I have is totally in another league compared to this under-performing lense. If it wouldn't have beem part of the camera package, I certainly would not have it.
  • Pros: Lightweight
  • Cons: Slow Focus, Weak Casing

I would not buy this lens once again!

  • Excerpt: Produces some very strong barrel distortion at wide end, and wavy lines when it gets to parallels, easily noticable!
  • Pros: Lightweight
  • Cons: Slow Focus, Weak Casing
