Summary: Okay. This is the the kit lens that comes with most canon DSLRs. The XSi, 40d and XS already have this. If you didn't buy the camera with this, I'd still suggest you move along. The lens is better than the older version that came with the Rebel XT or XTi, however it suffers from most of the same problems. It is flimsy. The build quality is fairly poor. There is no focus ring for manual, you just twist the end of the telescoping tube.
Summary: This lens is delivered with no box - I'm 99% certain it's the kit lens that normally comes with the camera. It is not marked as being a later generation product. Read any review and they all say that the Canon kit lens aren't great and I agree with that. The sharpness just isn't there. You can do no better than put your money into decent lenses and so I would recommend that you avoid this and look elsewhere.
Only good for closeup photography...but image quality is poor....

Summary: This lens came with my Rebel T2i and it is sharp only for closeup shoots. Landscape photography with this lens is a waste of time, it results in distorted images and sharpness is also very poor. This is a very basic lens and should only use for casual purposes. Canon 55-250mm lens beats this basic one. Images with 55-250mm is sharp and is pretty good. Now thinking to buy 50mm / 1.8 lens after reading the reviews....
Mediocre Lens!! (always under utilizes your camera performance)

Summary: This lens came with my 550D but does it not offer sharp and crispy pictures, it is good lens for Family pictures and it will somehow fill all the megapixels in your DSLR but results are just normal. Do not get trapped with this kit lens, buy a body and go for 50mm f1.8 instead. If you are there to shoot family functions and those kind of events then simply buy a point and shoot, you don't need a DSLR for that!
Excerpt: "...and won several entry level Canon DSLR's, each of which have been furnished with this 'kit' lens. It is quite obviously the result of cost-cutting exercises at Canon in an effort to keep a headline grabbing low prices for the camera/lens combinations as advertised in the photographic press and at point of sale. This is very evident in the build quality of the lens. It is really quite poor. Very plasticy, extremely light (too light in my opinion) ...
