Probably decentered

9 December 2013
  • Excerpt: When this lens finally became available at a more affordable price, I decided to acquire a sharp, fast lens. Unfortunately, my copy tested as soft along the left side while the rest of the frame was sharp. Tested with 3 different cameras with real life subjects. Returned.

Great optics, chintzy build quality

Chaz Newman, B&H Photo
12 October 2013
  • Excerpt: Using mainly for video work on the Blackmagic Cinema Camera, the optics are nice and the IS is a must for hand-held video work. However, the build quality feels very cheap and plastic. I originally owned the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM. $100 less and the build is outstanding (plus it's a little faster), but I traded up for the IS on the Canon.
  • Cons: Plastic build Quality, Weak Casing

Lots of wide-open vignetting

  • Summary: There's a massive amount of hype around this lens, but my experience with it left a lot to be desired. I have a Canon 60d and so far my lens arsenal (if you could call it that!) consists of a Canon 50mm f1.4, the 18-135mm kit lens, and a Rokinon 35mm f1.4. I shoot in a lot of low light situations, so I purchased the EF-S 17-55mm based on all the positive reviews. (I've been looking for a high-quality, "fast" zoom -- mainly for indoor DSLR video.

...good lens but not worth the money

shadowgold, Adorama
7 August 2012
  • Excerpt: It's a very good lens. My rating is based on price and comparison to the same size kit lens. After using both, there is very little difference in image quality...Yes, I know many will disagree and that's your right, but the truth can't be changed.
  • Pros: Consistent Output, Easily Interchangeable, Fast / accurate auto-focus

Good lens, dust inside

Mr_Carlos, Canon
21 March 2012
  • Conclusion: Good walk-around lens, sharp images, good performance in low light conditions, fast and silent autofocus... BUT after a few days of use I got big dust particles inside the lens, for the price that's just unacceptable
  • Pros: sharp, constant aperture, fast autofocus
  • Cons: dust inside, overpriced, not sealed

For the $$$$ - it could be better

dslrreview, Adorama
13 February 2012
  • Excerpt: This lens was purchased primarily for video use on a Canon T3i. We found that it was pretty difficult to get a sharp focus at 3.5 and lower.... could have been a bad lens though. We returned it and bought a Tokina 11-16 and are pretty happy with it.Additional info about the Tokina for those interested: We put the Tokina beside a Canon 10-22 and tested on a few camera charts and found that the Canon is sharper at 100% crop.
  • Pros: Lightweight
  • Cons: Poor in Low Light, Weak Casing

Not as good as 24-70 f2.8 L

pjarbit, B&H Photo
13 December 2011
  • Excerpt: Excellent lens, but head to head 24-70 is just sharper and the colors pop. If you are deciding between these 2 lenses and I am using it on an APSC format camera 0 I would highly recommend the L series well over the efs 17 to 55
  • Pros: Consistent Output, Easily Interchangeable, Fast / accurate auto-focus

Not as sharp as I would like.

LV, Adorama
4 September 2011
  • Excerpt: Others have complained that this lens is constructed poorly. I have not experienced this. I do seem to have a problem with "not so sharp images".Some images are sharp...some are not. I'm going to work with it for a while before I decide to switch to something else. Could be calibration. I expected more for a lens that was [$] and was not L series.
  • Pros: Fast / accurate auto-focus, Great Landscape lens, Nice Bokeh

Dust inside

stranja, B&H Photo
23 August 2011
  • Excerpt: This lens is great, I use it for video. BUT the construction is very poor! It got dust inside the lens after one week of using!! And there is no way to get it out. Is it really Canon lens?
  • Pros: Low Light, Sharp at all focal length
  • Cons: Difficult to Clean, Heavy, Weak Casing
