Not a Fan

  • Excerpt: I will preface this review with the fact that I am a student, and this piece of equipment belongs to my school. That being said, it easily could have fallen into some less careful hands and suffered some damage, but here are my findings with this lens. 1. The focus is SLOW.
  • Pros: Rugged, Strong Construction
  • Cons: Blurry Focus, Heavy, Poor in Low Light, Slow Focus

Bought mostly for the F/2.8

Costa Rica photos, B&H Photo
6 January 2015
  • Excerpt: I bought this for a wedding. I didn't want to have to change lens and it did great for what I needed. I am happy with it for the versatility. It did not wow me by any means like some of the prime 50mm lens I have shot but I needed something so that I would not miss the shot and this one was pretty...
  • Pros: Durable, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Nice Bokeh, Rugged, Strong Construction
  • Cons: Heavy

Probably decentered

  • Excerpt: When this lens finally became available at a more affordable price, I decided to acquire a sharp, fast lens. Unfortunately, my copy tested as soft along the left side while the rest of the frame was sharp. Tested with 3 different cameras with real life subjects. Returned.

Great optics, chintzy build quality

Chaz Newman, B&H Photo
12 October 2013
  • Excerpt: Using mainly for video work on the Blackmagic Cinema Camera, the optics are nice and the IS is a must for hand-held video work. However, the build quality feels very cheap and plastic. I originally owned the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM.
  • Cons: Plastic build Quality, Weak Casing

Lots of wide-open vignetting

  • Summary: There's a massive amount of hype around this lens, but my experience with it left a lot to be desired. I have a Canon 60d and so far my lens arsenal (if you could call it that!) consists of a Canon 50mm f1.4, the 18-135mm kit lens, and a Rokinon 35mm f1.4.

  • Excerpt: It's a very good lens. My rating is based on price and comparison to the same size kit lens. After using both, there is very little difference in image quality...Yes, I know many will disagree and that's your right, but the truth can't be changed.

Good lens, dust inside

Mr_Carlos, Canon
21 March 2012
  • Conclusion: Good walk-around lens, sharp images, good performance in low light conditions, fast and silent autofocus... BUT after a few days of use I got big dust particles inside the lens, for the price that's just unacceptable
  • Pros: sharp, constant aperture, fast autofocus
  • Cons: dust inside, overpriced, not sealed

  • Excerpt: This lens was purchased primarily for video use on a Canon T3i. We found that it was pretty difficult to get a sharp focus at 3.5 and lower.... could have been a bad lens though. We returned it and bought a Tokina 11-16 and are pretty happy with it.
