Auto Focus Problems
Paul, B&H Photo

Excerpt: I just had my third auto focus failure with this lens. Will be sending it in again for repair. Lens is excellent and it has been my workhorse, but when it fails to auto focus while you are in the field on a shoot, it becomes a failure lens! It searches back and forth and may or may not finally focus! Same identical failure for the third time. Gets expensive to repair!!!
Excerpt: Had this lens for 4 years. IS failed in 1st year. It would vibrate / chatter when trying to focus. Canon repaired under warranty in 2009. Same problem again started last April 2011. Finally got it in for repair this April - repair will be $250.00 . Lens is rarely used and would not recommend. Dust issues as well . Terrible lens creep. Point camera down and zoooom.
Excerpt: I was very excited to get this lens after the reviews I read. Really wanted this focal length zoom with the f/2.8 and IS for my 7d and that's why I went with this lens instead of an L series. I've tried this lens at every f stop and with mirror lock-up, tripod, etc. to get a sharp photo and could get nothing better than my kit lens gives me. For the price, I expect more than that in performance.
Excerpt: I really thought this was a must have lens but after using it for a month or so I'm just not impressed with the clarity of the shots. Maybe I'm too used to my 50 & 100mm primes? For the price I just don't think it's worth it. Pictures aren't sharp and I feel as if my landscape shots aren't good looking at all.
Excerpt: I purchased this lens to upgrade my kit lens on my Rebel EOS camera.Right out of the box this lens has produced very poor results. The kit lens actually preformed better in most cases. For the money they charge one should get a better built product or at least one that can produce.I have sent the lens back to Canon for repair/replacement.We will see if Canon repairs the lens without charging me as if the lens has been mishandled.2 weeks old and back to Canon it goes.Should...
Summary: I really wanted to like this lens. I read so many positive reviews and so many reports showing excellent performance. Specifically, I was wanting the sharpest lens with the most detail. I don't expect to be upgrading to a full-frame soon, so the range fit my needs better than any of the current L offerings. I purchased the EF-S 17-55 to replace a Sigma 17-70 lens with which I wasn't entirely happy.
Far from being a "quality feel smooth action" zoom control !

Summary: I purchased this lens from Amazon just before Christmas, give them their due, it arrived on time for the 25th, so well done Amazon and the postal services. I had spent ages reading all the great reviews this lens has, before deciding to buy what I thought, should be a great quality lens. However I was so disappointed when I took it out of the box and operated the zoom control, it was "far from smooth" in its operation.
Excerpt: I returned it - Overall It performed as a great lens - great but not excelent. I know its not L glass - but canon forgot to remember this when they priced it at around $1200. I ended up returning it for a cheaper sigma 18-50 2.8. Pictures from this lens are not up to par with my 50 1.4, or even my 50 1.8. The sigma I replaced this with seems to be a little slower at focusing, doesn't have the IS, or the USM.
