The Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM has a higher quality of construction than the typical kit lens, and improved image quality as well as a better set of features than the EF-S 18-55. What has been added?

** Ring USM

** 3 stop image stabilization.

It has also improved upon the normal 17-85 by offering a fixed f/2.8 aperture and L-Series grade Ultra-Low Dispersion glass lens elements to the mixture.

The price seems quite reasonable in comparison to the addition of these features, however the reduced focal range is one downside.

The Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 USM IS is not a perfect lens but it lives quite well up to the very high expectations of the user base. The resolution figures are among the very best seen so far for an APS-C standard zoom lens. The center resolution is nothing short of outstanding and the even borders can keep a very good to even excellent quality level. The distortion characteristic is quite typical for a zoom lens in this range (pronounced barrel distortions @ 17mm,... Read more

  2. Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens Review

    25 September 2008

Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM is a superb lens, with fantastic image quality and overall characteristics. Build quality can be improved and the lens does not come with a lens hood or a soft case, which comes as a disappointment considering its high retail price. Nevertheless, the lens is probably the best EF-S lens currently manufactured and is going to be a worthy addition to anyone's collection. Anyone with an APS-C camera that is... Read more

How well does it work with the EOS 5D? This is an "EF- S " lens, casting an image circle only large enough to cover the sensor in Canon's less expensive digital SLRs. If you managed to defeat the lens mount interlocks and attacked this lens to a film or full-frame sensor body, such as the Canon EOS 5D , $2022 ( review ), the corners of the resulting images would be black. Review of Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS, EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS, Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR LD and Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC Macro and Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 This is a review on compact lenses for use with Canon APS-C cameras (e.g., EOS 20D, EOS 400D Digital Rebel XTi) for general and portrait photography. I have been using a Canon EF-S 17-85mm on a Canon 20D since 2004 and have been reasonably satisfied with its performance within its f/4 to f/5.6 aperture limits. I... Read more

  5. Canon 17-55mm

This is Canon's most expensive midrange zoom designed exclusively for the 1.6x sensor cameras . It only works on the 30D , 20D and the Digital Rebels ( Rebel (EOS 300) , Rebel XT (EOS 350) and Rebel XTi (EOS 400) . Forget it for film cameras, full-frame and 1.3x digital cameras. It will cost you about a grand. I'll cover if it's worth it at my recommendations at the end. 1.) Instant autofocus. Read more

An EF-S lens. $1,000. I told myself repeatedly that I would not buy it. I mean come on, a non-L series lens for this much money? You have got to be kidding me? After killing myself over the decision between the Canon EF 24-105mm F4L IS USM and the Canon ... Read more

This is a great lens if you're looking to upgrade to a high end walk around zoom. Takes very sharp pictures and colors are great. The bokeh is nice and buttery smooth making even the simplest pictures dramatic. Great for indoor photography and low light situations. This is a good lens to build your collection of glass around. The only thing keeping this lens from being an "L" is the fact that it's not encased in metal with the red stripe, otherwise this is an "L"; and a... Read more
