The EF-S 15-85mm is designed specifically for Canon digital cameras that are compatible with EF-S lenses. It is available in late October and sell at an estimated retail price of $799.99.

Features

The Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM features image stabilization technology that is important especially in macro photography. Shift camera shake and angular camera shake affect both the image formed on the sensor and the image shown in the viewfinder. This happens especially when shooting at 1x , since the inability to properly compose and focus due to a shaky image in the viewfinder makes it difficult to record sharp images. Image Stabilization technology found in Canon range of lens works by using a floating lens element that is moved orthogonally to the optical axis of the lens using electromagnets. Vibration is detected using two piezoelectric angular velocity sensors (often called gyroscopic sensors), one to detect horizontal movement and the other to detect vertical movement. The lens then corrects for pitch and yaw axis rotations.

Previous questions about this product

  • Canon 15-85 or 17-55?

I have a Canon 30D and am deciding between the 17-55 2.8 or the newer 15-85. I also have a 70-300 IS DO for zoom. I use the camera for multipurpose - traveling abroad, family get togethers, and outdoor shooting. Any advice would be appreciated!

    Answered by gensao 2011-02-09:

If you do not need the low light specialty of the 17-55 2.8, I would get the 15-85 for the wider zoom range and would commplement the 70-300 IS
