Excellent Optics, Upgraded IS and Good build for a plastic mount lens!

Summary: Excellent optics and very good IS. The lens is an upgrade from the Mark I of this lens. I have never handled the Mark II, so can't comment on the differences there. I have owned the Canon EF-S 15-85mm lens which is incredible for the APS censored DSLRs, but Optically I would put this little 18-55mm STM up against it with no problem. Of course it's a plastic mount, but then look at the price differences.
Summary: Five stars for its value and features. Much better than I expected. Considerably improved over previous versions. Internal focus(front element doesn't turn), practically silent focusing(even quieter than my 40mm STM), manual focus without flipping a switch(with shutter button pressed halfway), very good image quality for a budget general purpose lens. Haven't had it very long yet but plan on using it a lot.
Summary: As many have, I've found myself turning more and more to shooting short videos with my dSLR and this is a great change over the T3i that I had before. The focus in the movie is a tad bit spotty, but I think that's a function of my lack of expertise with the focusing modes (point vs. area best guess) while shooting. I've only had it a short while, but it has been ultra silent.I used the manual focus in a beach shoot with a friend popping the question with great results.
Summary: I have several canon L lenses including the 85 1.2 and the70-200 2.8 is II .Sometimes I just don't need or want to take the the big heavy stuff out. I bought the eos-m camera and the 22 pancake lens as a kit ,then bought the ef-m 18-55 later. Both of them are sharp and well built they don't feel cheap at all. It's nice to have a small zoom but the the 22mm is a little sharper and better in low light.
Summary: If you are looking for a lens that is good for AF on the Canon 70D for video, this would be one! I was hesitant in getting STM type lenses as I have read about the pancake version has noise, to my surprise, this was soo quiet that I thought it wasn't working. But it does work.
Summary: For those who might think that the STM lenses are only useful for the new Canon DSLR's that utilize the continuous autofocus tracking feature with the new hybrid AF sensors, this is not entirely true! If you are on a budget and wish to use auto focus for taking both video and stills but are unable to upgrade your current DSLR body to one of the newer models than this lens is for you!
