Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens

The Digital Picture
2 May 2013
  • Excerpt: Canon's EF-S 18-55mm kit lenses have always been small, light and cheap and the latest versions have the very useful image stabilization feature. These lenses have been and continue to be a good value when purchased as a starter lens in a DSLR kit, but they have never been a strongly desired lens otherwise.

REVIEW: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Review

  • Excerpt: Handling and features This is the latest incarnation of Canon's 18-55mm image stabilised kit lens for EF-S compatible EOS cameras sporting their new STM stepping motor technology, which promises to provide smooth, silent autofocus, especially well-suited for shooting video. Although most people who end up owning this lens will pick it up as part of a kit, bundled with one of Canon's entry-level SLRs, it can also be purchased for around £200.

Canon EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM

PhotographyBLOG
24 August 2013
  • Excerpt: The Canon EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens has quite a wide focusing ring but annoyingly only about 3mm of its width has a textured surface, making it trickier to locate and use in a hurry. There are no hard stops at either ends of the range, making it more difficult to set focus at infinity. Manual override of the autofocusing system is available at any time. Polariser users should be pleased that the 52mm filter thread doesn't rotate on focus.

Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM

  • Excerpt: The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens has a very narrow focusing ring that doesn't really encourage you to use it - perhaps Canon thinks that most users of this lens will never manually focus. There are no hard stops at either ends of the range, making it more difficult to set focus at infinity. Manual override of the autofocusing system is available at any time. Polariser users should be pleased that the 58mm filter thread doesn't rotate on focus.

Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens

PhotoReview
17 May 2013
  • Summary: Like its 'sibling' the 18-55mm lens can only be used with Canon's DLSR cameras that have 'APS-C sized' sensors.  Purchased with a camera body, it represents good value for money and provides a worthwhile foundation for a more comprehensive kit that will grow as the photographer's requirements expand. It's also a useful starter lens for digicam upgraders looking for improved image quality.

Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 STM IS - Review / Test Report

photozone.de
9 May 2013
  • Conclusion: Many users will probably think that photozone went gaga considering the resolution results of the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 STM IS. Honestly, we'd prefer it to be worse so we wouldn't need to argue. :-) Anyway, keep in mind that this is a zoom lens with a very moderate 3x zoom ratio and a slow max. aperture range. Such lenses are relatively easy to design and the challenges are well understood- so this may partly explain the relatively high resolution results.
