Reviewer: The Digital Picture26 October 2007Open the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens's aperture wide and watch the background blur away. The bokeh (background blur quality) - helped by an 8-blade aperture - is very nice. Of course, taking a relatively close portrait photo at f/1.8 makes keeping both eyes in focus difficult. Read more

I drooled over the Canon 85 1.2 L. My hand hovered over the credit card ready to order. Stopped, decided I didn’t want to die. My wife would kill me when she saw the credit bill. I’m sure many a man has settled for the marriage saving 85 1.8. Ok it is not huge or sporting pretty a red ring, but if used wisely, combined with understanding of the optical limitations of apertures larger then 2.8 this lens can be just as much fun it bed. Investing in portrait lens.
...great for large groups because you can always adjust how much background is in focus - all or very little.
