No real surprises here

  • Excerpt: I bought this lens as an upgrade from the 70-200 F4L IS, so I was expecting it to be quite good, and a little bigger. No real surprises there: it's quite good, and a little heavier. If you've never owned one of the 70-200L lenses, that means it's extremely sharp, even wide open, and it's built like a tank. I haven't had a chance to really put it through it's paces, but I am noticing it doesn't focus quite as quickly in LOW light as I had hoped.
  • Pros: Consistent Output, Durable, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Nice Bokeh, Rugged, Strong Construction
  • Cons: Heavy

Action it is

  • Excerpt: This is one of the best lens I have in my bag. I really needed something to up my game just a bit. I got this lens in on a Thursday and Sat. had to do a rodeo event. Even though I did not have a problem on out door photos. This lens made my photos sharper, and the focus is great it made a big different even on out door photos. I cant want to see what happen in a low light indoor arena.
  • Pros: Durable, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Strong Construction

Great lens but no IS is difficult

  • Excerpt: Don't get me wrong, this is the lenses is sharp, well designed and it built like a tank. I scoured the Internet for reviews on how this lens handles handheld with no IS and with no luck. So I thought to try it and I couldn't make it work for me. I shoot subjects without a tripod and love it wide open at 2.8 but the problem is that you buy a lenses like this to use at longer focal lengths and the 2.8 in low light.

Very Satisfied

  • Excerpt: I have not used the newer, more expensive version of this lens, but I see no immediate reason to spend the extra $ for the upgrade. So far, I am very satisfied with the quality of the photos this lens takes, even in low light. So glad I saved the money and went with this lens... maybe someday I will upgrade, but I see absolutely no need right now.

Great lens

  • Excerpt: I bought this lens for taking pictures of my daughter playing volleyball. It's heavier than I am used to, but the pictures are surprisingly crisp and detailed. I take pictures from inside a high school gym, which has less than perfect lighting. After watching a few tutorials I have taken great photos we are enjoying. Outside photos using the full auto mode are awesome.
  • Pros: Durable, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Strong Construction
  • Cons: Heavy, Poor in Low Light

Fast lens, sharp focus

16 October 2013
  • Excerpt: I recently switched from Nikon to Canon and I bought this lens to replace my Nikkor 80-200 f/2.8. I am sure the fact that I'm now using it on a Mark III makes a difference as well - but I am blown away by how sharp these images are and how fast it autofocuses. I use this lens to shoot HS football at night as well as indoor volleyball and church weddings, and it allows me to get great shots from a distance.
  • Pros: Consistent Output, Easily Interchangeable, Fast / accurate auto-focus

Solidly constructed

Chuck, B&H Photo
2 October 2013
  • Excerpt: The lens is beautifully constructed. It has a very solid feel to it, much better construction than the less expensive lenses I have been using previously. It reminds me more of the old lenses I am used to on my film camera. The lens is a bit heavy as compared to the less expensive lenses. It shoots great. If I had the money, I would have liked to get the IS option. But all in all a great choice.

perfect, except no IS

16 August 2013
  • Excerpt: other than the fact that it has no IS, this lens is perfect. super sharp images, super quick AF, super quiet, and kindov heavy (but it's a quality item with lots of glass so it's to be expected). I waited 2 years to save up for this lens and let me tell you, it is totally worth the money! Oh, and the bokeh is to die for!
