Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Lens Review

technologyx.com
20 May 2014
  • Summary: After around a year of using this lens I must say it is one of my favorites. Though it is a larger and heavier lens to hold, having the one stop faster aperture than the f/4 variants is completely worth it. I am able to shoot at ISOs half of what I would normally and can reap the rewards of better bokeh on top of that! The only real fault I can think of for this lens is its weight, but it is to be expected due to the tank like build quality.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM lens test

  • Conclusion: Still has much to offer if you can live without an image stabiliser. Optics are excellent and the AF is first class too. However, it costs the same as the Sigma, which boasts a stabiliser, but the Canon is better protected from the elements.

REVIEW: Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM

  • Excerpt: Being priced at around £980, this older 70-200mm lens may lack stabilisation but does include weather sealing and fast, silent ultrasonic focusing at a much lower price, making it an interesting alternative for those on a tighter budget.
  • Pros: Good value, Excellent Build Quality, Very good sharpness in the centre of the frame, Fast focusing
  • Cons: Loss of sharpness towards the edges of the frame, Falloff of illumination towards the corners at 200mm

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Lens Review

SLR Lens and Camera Reviews
6 June 2009
  • Summary: Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM is one of the better telephoto zooms in Canon's modern lineup. I would even say that this is one of the better telephoto zooms available in the EF mount. Overall performance is slightly better then that of its more expensive IS variant, which is a bit surprising and depressing if you think about it carefully - even if the overall performance of both EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM and the more expensive EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM was identical, it...

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L USM Lens

The Digital Picture

  • Excerpt: The 70-200mm L lens family shows many genetic similarities aside from their obvious focal length range similarity. Top notch image quality with build quality to match is at the top of the list. All have constant wide apertures (f/2.8 or f/4) over their entire zoom range. All feature fast , quiet and accurate autofocusing benefiting from Ring USM (Ultrasonic Motor) and internal-focusing.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Lens Review

  • Summary: Although technically not the best lens optically, the high levels of centre sharpness will please those whose shooting style often results in their subject being isolated near to the centre of the frame. The reasonable price and excellent build quality should also ensure this lens is a good investment, being more than capable of taking the rigours of daily professional use in its stride.
  • Pros: Good value, Excellent Build Quality, Very good sharpness in the centre of the frame, Fast focusing
  • Cons: Loss of sharpness towards the edges of the frame, Falloff of illumination towards the corners at 200mm

EF 70-200 mm f/2.8L USM

  • Conclusion: One of the most interesting questions this test was supposed to answer was whether or not the model without stabilization is somehow optically different from its stabilized twin. Our measurements indicate that there are some differences but they are slight and very difficult to spot in real life pictures. Undoubtedly both lenses present a very high level of optics and mechanics as well. Is it really worth paying 500 $ more for the stabilization then?
  • Cons: weak work against bright light,, high vignetting on full frame.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 USM L - Full Format Review / Test Report

13 October 2009
  • Conclusion: The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 USM L may be one of the oldest lenses in the Canon lineup by now but it is still an impressive one. The produced images are very sharp at all focal length across the relevant aperture range. The high resolution is also supported by low lateral CAs. You will notice some vignetting at max. aperture but this is about in line to what we've seen from other lenses in this class here.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 USM L - Review / Test Report

photozone.de
16 June 2008
  • Conclusion: Very similar to its IS enabled cousin the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 USM L is an impressive piece of lens with superb build quality combined with an optical performance which is, in fact, slightly better than in the rest of the family and comparable to the best fix-focals in its range. So if you can live without IS (which is, however, darn attractive in its 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS incarnation) there're still good reasons to go for this superb lens!
