This telephoto zoom responds in as little as 0.5 seconds, while providing up to three stops of correction for camera shake. Its AF system has been refined for better response time and tracking speed. Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is designed with a new 8-blade circular aperture which offers excellent out-of-focus image. Constructed to pro standards, this fast zoom is also highly resistant to dust and moisture, too. This Lens is designed to have a durable construction with weather resistant network of gaskets and seals. Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM automatically deactivates when on a tripod to conserve battery power. Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM’s Rubber O-ring can be combined with EOS 1V and EF "II" teleconverters for near imperviousness to moisture exposure.

    The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 USM IS is a very good lens but not a stellar one. The resolution characteristic is excellent at 70mm and 135mm but at 200mm it disappoints - more so regarding its price tag. The results are still very good here (just at f/2.8) but when putting things into perspective (e.g. vs the superb EF 70-200mm f/4 USM L IS) the delivered quality is not overly impressive. Based on the performance at 200mm the potential with tele converters seems "limited".... Read more

    Performance of the lens is disappointing - for ~US$1,500 we expect a lens that performs consistently well and that's where Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM fails. The lens shows very good performance in the shorter zoom range (70-135mm), but falls short towards the longer end. This seems to be the only drawback with this lens as the lens excels in other areas. Build quality of the lens is simply superb, as expected from Canon's L grade lens. Artifacts are pretty minimal.... Read more

    This is the King of the four Canon 70-200mm lenses: it has IS ( Image Stabilization ) and is the faster f/2.8. This is the tele zoom toted by most Canon professionals. It's also the lens with which many the show-off shots in Canon's glossy brochures are shot.     Originally thought of purchasing the non-IS version of this lens, but was later convinced that I would eventually upgrade to the IS version. The weight difference is minor between the 2 lenses, so I purchased this version (70-200/2.8L IS). Read more

    At first I wondered if I was doing the right thing spending $1,600 for a lens, but I have no reservations after seeing the results (even my wife is OK with it). I'm an amateur photographer who shoots sporting events for my kids, mainly hockey, with an EOS 20D. I had been shooting with a 70-300mm EF 4-5.6 lens and couldn't compensate for the lighting issues and action (some blurring).
