Canon 400mm f/4.0

  • Summary: This is a fantastic lens for the appropriate application. Surfing shots or sports in general. It does weigh more than one may exspect and I would rec the appropriate monopod. I purchased the Manfrotto. You will also need an adapter for the attachment to the lens base.

Best Lens I've Ever Used

dsl1126, Ebay

  • Summary: I've used many Canon lenses in my life. This is truly the best lens, Canon or not, that I've ever used in my life. The IQ is excellent when the lens is used by itself or with a 1.4x or 2x Canon Tele-converter. The colors that are rendered digitally are amazing. You'll read that you can't hand hold this 13lb lens but I disagree. I have taken some amazing photos hand holding this lens. Why buy a car when you can buy a lens for the same price.

Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS USM review by Badmono

Badmono, slrgear.com
13 December 2008
  • Summary: I'm slightly dis-appointed with this lens, the slow focussing takes a lot of getting use to, and the slow F4 Aperture doesn't do the lens any favours either. IMO this lens ought to be a F2.8. It works well on Full frame and cut down sensors. The lens is sharp enough and the IS works well, but in comparison with My 'Money' lens the 400 F2.8 IS.

I have used it mainly for Wildlife and the results have made me go on safari's more over the last 6 months than I have for 3 years! Its just begs to be used and each picture come out wow! I know what i have been missing! Its costs almost the price of a small car ( a used one at least!

  • Summary: This is a great lens for bringing things up close and personal. Has image stabilizer that works great. Bit on the heavy side. Recommend it as worth the expense and weight.

Overpriced and false advertisement

Knut A Hansen, Amazon
29 October 2007
  • Summary: Why do they have a $20,000+ list price in the ad? Totally false advertisement as buying it from Canon USA directly it goes for $9100 (list price). Disappointed in Amazon on this deal trying to make $9800 seem like a good deal.

Worth the Weight!

Charlie MacPherson, Amazon
29 October 2007
  • Summary: I've owned this lens for most of a year now, and I am completely satisfied with it. Downsides - it's heavy at almost 12 pounds, and it costs half as much as a small car. It's like adopting a 12 pound child - if you're on a photo shoot, you have to take it everywhere. You can't let it out of your sight. It's a lot to carry, you certainly don't want to bang it around, and it's always in the back of your mind that somebody might like to snatch it when you're not looking.
