Summary: This is an ideal lens for my need and by my standards. My need is for a walk-around lens with macro capability and excellent optics. My standards are impeccable handling characteristics, obvious structural strength, proven durability and absolute precision. My standards for optical performance are even higher. Another factor in choosing this lens was its transformation from a .5 lifesize macro to a .8 lifesize macro on an APS-C Canon camera.
Excerpt: I love this lens because its short and compact. Theres no image stabilization, but for me IS is only needed when going less than a 1: 2 lifesize ratio. I can tell no difference in picture quality between this lens and the 100mm macro L lens at 1: 2 lifesize ratio. However, the 1/1 ratio is a must for me, which this lens cannot provide without extension tubes.
Excerpt: I bought this lens to specifically shoot food photography and I couldn't be happier! Fantastic sharpness with lots of pretty bokeh. Took it for a spin outside for some landscapes and was impressed there too! This lens is versatile and perfect for my needs!
Summary: I use this lens professionally everyday. It is a great lens. Light, fast, and the image quality it produces is on par with much more expensive glass. I was not surprised by that as it comes highly recommended from many of my peers but I think I was not sure it would be as good as it is. As a MACRO lens, it produces a razor sharp depth of field at f/2.5 in close to an object. The bokeh is beautiful as well. If you need a fast, high quality MACRO lens, check this one out.
Summary: One of the first questions that came to mind was if this lens could be used professionally. The answer is yes. Optics is more than good enough for working photographers. If you don't believe me, go to Ken Rockwell's photography website and read up on this lens. Personal experience with this lens has shown me that it has very good bokeh. The magnification is only 1:2, but for what I used it for (botanicals), it's perfect, because I don't need to go microscopic.
