Conclusion: The Canon EF 50mm F1.8 II may be one of the cheapest lenses currently on the market, but its optics belie its lowly price. As befits a classic standard prime lens, it's very sharp when stopped down (especially in the centre), shows minimal chromatic aberration, and has relatively low distortion; APS-C users will also benefit from extremely low vignetting.
Pros: Excellent image quality when stopped down, Essentially no lateral chromatic aberration, Extremely cheap
Cons: Extremely cheaply built, Harsh and distracting bokeh due to pentagonal aperture, Vignetting at wide apertures on full frame (which only disappears at F3.5), Inconsistent autofocus in low light (most problematic when using large apertures)
Excerpt: Build quality of the 50 f/1.8 is very cheap (as you might expect). This lens feels more like a toy than a piece of optics. It utilizes plastic contruction right down to the lens mount (the lenses are glass of course). This light material combined with the small size (2.7" x 1.6"/68.2mm x 41.0mm - WxL) puts this lens in the featherweight class - 4.6 oz (130g). The 50 f/1.8 is currently Canon's lightest .
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II (Full Format) - Review / Test Report
17 September 2009
Conclusion: The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II may be a "cheap" lens but it is undoubtedly a capable one. It shares its characteristics with most other 50mm lenses, reads: it's somewhat soft at f/1.8 but at medium aperture settings it is hard to beat with respect to resolution. Distortions as well as lateral CAs are basically non-issues. Vignetting is a significant problem at f/1.8 and even at f/2.8 but that (heavy vignetting at max.
Conclusion: At the beginning of this review I stated that the 50mm f/1.8 II is the cheapest lens in the Canon line. really refers to the price tag only because for a price below 100 EUR you get a light-weight, high performing lens. So may be a better wording here. Naturally you can't expect wonders regarding build quality for this price but the compromises work out better here than with the cheapo kit zooms.
