Conclusion: The lens is quite sharp when it's in focus. But it doesn't autofocus. At all! It made an attempt at autofocusing when it was new but after a few months it wouldn't autofocus at all. The selected focus spot blinks, claiming that focus has been achieved. But usually it doesn't even make the attempt. Mine can be focused manually if you can stand the gritty feel. I have a friend whose 50 f/1.4 won't even focus manually! It would be fine if it would just focus.
Excerpt: This lens is easy to use, lightweight and has a fast focus. However its my most disappointing lens. Failed to focus 13 months after buying. I saw the other bad stuck focus reviews but convinced myself Canon would not knowingly make a bad lens. I was wrong, I think they just did and still do. Costs half price of the new to repair which includes a 6 months warranty.
Excerpt: Sorry, Canon. Mine was a dud. Great bokeh and very nice images, but after fairly light use and extremely gentle care, the focusing ring completely died. I can not focus manually or on AF. No other lens in my kit (mostly L) has had similar problems. Extremely disappointed. This was my standby lens to fill the gap between 17-40 and 70-200, both L. Total waste of money.
Excerpt: I would advise anyone to stay away from this lens. I've used this lens on a Rebel Xsi and a 7D. On both cameras, the lens has serious focusing problems on autofocus. This is true for all types of lighting conditions. I sent the lens in to Canon for repairs, but the lens is no different after Canon allegedly "repaired" it.

I've spoke with many people and several of them who own this lens have had the same issue.
Excerpt: Had to send it back. I should have read more reviews about this lens. Apparently there is a problem with this model in auto-focus. For me it was out of focus 70% of the time. Sent it back for a new one.
Excerpt: I upgraded to this lens from the f/1.8. I am so disappointed in this lens. Focus points are off and inconsistent. Also, overall focus and sharpness is also inconsistent. Some images are sharp at a specific appeture and other images are way too soft and fuzzy at the same appeture, lighting condition, shutter speed, distance to subject, etc.... I hate this lens and am looking into returning it.
Excerpt: Quality of this lens is great, however, I only used the lens 3 times in a period of 5 years and the Auto Focus on the lens went bad. I can only use the lens on Manual. I've owned many lenses and bodies over the course of 40 years and never had a lens go bad. I am very careful with my equipment and never bang or drop my equipment.
Excerpt: For available light & street photography. Too soft wide open at 1.4, somewhat better by 5.6 but really what I would consider not good. I traded in 2 older good Canon EF lenses at B&H Photo and was greatly disappointed in their meager allowance for these lenses and further disappointed to find the 50mm 1.4 not good at all. Returned the lense 2 days after purchase. Buyers beware.
