  • Summary: Very disappointed - I bought this lens based on the incredible reviews on the seller while in the US for work. When the package arrived all it contained was the filter kit. As I am going back to Canada now I will incur the charge to return the filter kit to get a refund.

Please be warned - serious flaws

Grace, B&H Photo
16 January 2015
  • Excerpt: I loved my 50mm f/1.8 so like many, enthusiatically decided to upgrade to what I thought would be a better constructed lens that should perform better being almost 4x the cost. I kept very good protective care of it and it was never dropped, dinged, etc.
  • Cons: Imminent Focus Fail

Disappointing

GG, Canon
23 November 2014
  • Conclusion: I recently acquired this lens and was quite disappointed. Although I usually check different reviews before acquiring any goods, I trusted Canon. Unfortunately, the lens has a major focus defect. Auto focus and manual focus do not work....

It broke.

Dan in MN, Canon
2 June 2014
  • Conclusion: Used very rarely for about 24 months. It spent most of its time in a professional case. It was very well cared for. The focus is now not working. No manual focus. No auto focus. This highlight an extremely poor build quality on this lens that is well known, and manufacturing on this lens has not...

Once the focus blows, you can pay more

MN Dan, Adorama

  • Excerpt: I am an enthusiast who is in the process of moving into the semi-pro caetgory. I bought the lens in 2012 just before spring portrait season was about to ramp up. The focus was fast, and the images were generally very good.
  • Pros: Good Paperweight, Recyclable Materials
  • Cons: Not Durable, Slow Focus

Buy a 50mm F1.2L

Anonymous, Crutchfield
18 December 2013
  • Summary: Evidently the folks who are reviewing this lens never had any "L" glass. Save your money and buy the F1.2L. I had to give it one star to post the review. It doesn't deserve any stars.
  • Pros: It functions.
  • Cons: You get what you pay for.

Optically fine, mechanically lousy

Joe, Canon
6 November 2013
  • Conclusion: The lens is quite sharp when it's in focus. But it doesn't autofocus. At all! It made an attempt at autofocusing when it was new but after a few months it wouldn't autofocus at all. The selected focus spot blinks, claiming that focus has been achieved. But usually it doesn't even make the attempt.
  • Cons: Poor build quality, won't focus at all

Stay away unless you love repurchasing

Justin.W, B&H Photo
29 June 2013
  • Excerpt: This lens is easy to use, lightweight and has a fast focus. However its my most disappointing lens. Failed to focus 13 months after buying. I saw the other bad stuck focus reviews but convinced myself Canon would not knowingly make a bad lens. I was wrong, I think they just did and still do.
  • Pros: Easy To Use, Fast focus, Lightweight
  • Cons: Not dependable, Weak Build Quality

Focus ring dead

reconfigured journalist, B&H Photo
16 June 2013
  • Excerpt: Sorry, Canon. Mine was a dud. Great bokeh and very nice images, but after fairly light use and extremely gentle care, the focusing ring completely died. I can not focus manually or on AF. No other lens in my kit (mostly L) has had similar problems. Extremely disappointed.
  • Cons: Dead Right After Warranty
