so far so good

Summary: the main reason i bought this lens is i do a lot of hiking and carrying a 7 pound lens around instead of my 12 pound 600 makes a big diff. i am still learning how to use this lens, when to use stabilization and when not to. i have noticed the pictures are sharper. you can get some really sharp images even at an aperture of 4.5-5.0. so shooting wild life it allows faster shutter speeds in lower light.
This is a birders/wildlife photographers dream lens!

Summary: I purchased this lens for birding and wildlife and to a lesser extent, compression of landscape scenes. I had a 400mm 5.6 but went for the 500mm f4 for the IS. I considered the similar 600mm f4 IS but it was just too heavy in comparison to the 500mm f4 IS. The image stabilization is outstanding. I can handhold it for a quick grab shot of a bird or other subject when needed. Most of the time it sits on my tripod with Wimberley Sidekick head.
Summary: This is an increadable lens. I bought it for wildlife and bird photography. It is a little heavy, but with some practice I got to where I could hand hold it to shoot birds in flight. I added a 1.4x teleconverter for a little extra reach. This was an upgrade from a 400mm f/5.6.
Summary: If you have any thoughts on going into the field with the 500mm f4 without a tripod....I hope you're strong. You can get away with a couple of handheld shots, but it needs to be a bright sunny day ! The lens itself is extremely well built, and takes magnificent photos. Canon is very proud of this piece of hardware monetarily.....but to me.....it's well worth the bucks !
Summary: This lens, when mated with my MKIII is incredible, and when mated with my "quicky" digital Rebel, is amazing! It's ultra sharp, ultra quick. I shoot for several sports photography companies, and shoot for enjoyment for colleges that my children attend. This lens makes it incredible to take those lacrosse pictures, and gets you right in the action. The IS feature is invaluable for shooting lacrosse, and any sport at all.
Summary: Buying a 500mm is always a commitment, weather you are a professional or not. You really got to need the extra 100mm for deciding to go for the 500mm instead of a considerably cheaper 100-400. However, once you get it, you realized why prime telephotos are so unique. 1) Image quality: You will be amazed by the difference between a 500mm and a 100-400 or even a 400f/4 + extender.
Summary: I had always dreamed of owning a big white one day, well that day came and what a lens it turned out to be. Fantastic image quality, even with the 1.4 converter it produces stunning images. I have printed out A4 sized prints which were cropped from the original somewhat and they are truly stunning. It needs a good support, so a decent tripod and gimbal head or a big beanbag.
