Summary: Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM is an excellent long telephoto prime that should be considered by anyone with a limited (relatively speaking) budget. The lens offers very solid image quality and excellent build quality, with good handling of various artifacts, including flare, vignetting and color fringing, all at a more or less affordable price. Are there better super long telephotos out there? Sure.
Excerpt: The 400 f/5.6 is relatively light in weight but very solidly built . It feels long and narrow in your hand - and feels even lighter than it is. This feel is most similar to the Canon EF 300mm f/4.0 L IS USM Lens . The built-in slide-out lens hood is very convenient.
