love this lens

  • Excerpt: Use this with 5D3 for raptors and about everything else too. Couldn't even dream the optics to be better and the new image stabilization. I use this all the time with a 2X TCIII for birds in flight etc, and shots are still incredibly sharp and the autofocus is fast. Don't let anyone tell you this isn't true. And, most of my flight shots are handheld using stabilization 3. Really quite amazing.
  • Pros: Consistent Output, Durable, Easily Interchangeable, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Nice Bokeh, Rugged, Strong Construction

Flawless

  • Summary: This lens has an image quality and build that is unmatched in my experience. I have used a good majority of the "L" lenses Canon offers outside of the “great white” super-telephoto and tilt-shift offerings. I thought the 24-70mm f/2.8L II and 70-200mm f/2.8L II IS were sharp, but this lens is an a whole new level. Wide open, the detail and clarity is stunning. Stopping down really does nothing but increase depth of field. It is just that sharp wide open.

Perfect lens

  • Summary: I use this lens mostly for sports photography, but it's actually great for portraiture too. I've used it for a few senior sessions and the bokeh is amazing. Super smooth, super sharp, even wide open. Stop it down to f/4 and it's even sharper! For sports, I mostly shoot football, softball, and baseball with this lens, but you can actually shoot the far end of the court in basketball as well. I can't overstate how good this lens is.

Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM review by frances

  • Summary: I rented this lens for a week and tried it out at every opportunity. The iq is simply awesome. I found the lens to be uncomfortable to handhold. I would have removed the tripod mount were it possible to do so, but I could not find a way. The focus ring is so large that I always had my hand on it, which is good for MF but not so for AF. I am so used to the flexibilty of my 100~400 that I much prefer it to the 300.
  • Pros: fast, sharp
  • Cons: heavy, expensive, fixed tripod mount

Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM review by Invertalon

  • Summary: This lens is simply phenomenal. This is my first step into the “big whitesâ€ and I am sure will be in my collection for many years to come. Optically, it is practically flawless. The sharpness is out of this world and unlike any other lens I have had the pleasure to use and own (such lenses as the 24-70 II, 70-200 II, 35L, 85L, 135L, 300 f/4L, 400 5.6L…. And many more). The 300mm f/2.8L II is in a league all its own.
  • Pros: Image Quality, Mode 3 IS, Build Quality, Sharpness With Extenders, Colors/Contrast, AF Performance, Weight Balance
  • Cons: Cost

Outstanding lens - but not worth it as an upgrade

Maiaibing, Amazon
19 February 2014
  • Summary: I have had my new EF 300mm f/2.8 IS L ii for six months now. This review will focus on a specific question; should current owners of the EF 300mm f/2.8 IS L "upgrade" to the mark ii version? The short answer is "no". But there are other reasons than "upgrading" to consider, and a special case for those who shoot film. So read on. Picture Quality Stunning. But not anymore than its predecessor. Frankly, you would be hard pressed to see the difference. It's there.
