Conclusion: First let me say that this review is written for my copy of the 24-70 f/2.8 - not my opinion of the lens in general. I have seen what a good copy of this lens can do, and it is amazing! A good copy of this lens is a solid "10"! Unfortunately, I fell victim to Canon's poor quality control that this lens is known for, and received a VERY POOR copy. The first problem I noticed was with the zoom ring. It was very tight between 24-50mm with a grinding sound as it turned.
Summary: I bought this lens to use for weddings and portraiture. I'm now returning the *third* copy I've tried. All of them have had serious focusing problems: Sometimes the shots are back-focussed, and if the subject is farther than about 20 feet away nothing is in focus. This lens is fine for portraiture, assuming the subject is within about six feet of the camera. Beyond that they'll be blurry. This is not a camera shake / shutter speed problem.
Summary: I tried using the lens for portraits, weddings and events. I found the lens to be too heavy and everything I shot was out to focus. I sent it back to Canon and the lens was the same when it was returned. As far as I am concerned it is a piece of junk. I eventually sold it. I would not recommend it to anyone.
Conclusion: I have had a very disappointing experience with this lens. I have been a Canon user since the 1970s beginning with the FTBn and I have several L series lens, all of which work flawless. I ordered it from Dell and as soon as received it I took several test shots with my 40D at various focal lengths using autofocus. I was surprised to find none of them were sharp. I then put the lens on both an XTI and an old Digital Rebel and got the same results.
Summary: After being much impressed by the quality of a friend's photos using a Canon 5D + this lens it seemed like a no brainer when it came to upgrading the crappy 18-55 IS kit lens on my 500D. Photos, specifically portraits, are quite nice at up to about 5m, with nice bokeh and 'shape', but not all that crisp. Over 5m, it's very disappointing. Barely 1 photo in 5 is in focus, and those that are quite soft.
Excerpt: ...
