Excerpt: First copy I received made an audible clicking noise when operating the zoom ring. The zoom ring also felt very gritty. Sent back. Second copy had very inconsistent autofocus. Micro autofocus adjustments were impossible as the lens would backfocus sometimes, and front-focus others in the exact same test conditions! If the copies I evaluated did not have these issues, I'd likely give the lens 4 out of 5 stars.
Summary: As far as the lens is concerned, it was superb. Great contrast and saturation, and as all the reviews have noted, it was extremely sharp. The problem for this lens however was the quality of the lens construction. I had to go through 3 different lenses, and in the end, I returned all of them because they all had similar issues. The first lens I received had issues on the focus ring. When focusing you can hear the ball bearings rubbing and was not smooth.
Excerpt: I owned the 1st 24-70 f/2.8, I believe I had a softer sample as they had quite a range of variation in them, however this version is loads better. It is almost as sharp as my macro, even wide open, which is unheard of for a zoom. Its a bit soft when focusing at the minimum focal length however its not a macro so I don't expect it to be spectacular at that end.
